aiming headlights

This is kind of a weird question, but while driving at night, should your headlight beams eventually overlap one another slightly? Or should you plainly see two headlight beams that don't overlap?

As far as I know, the beams should not be separated, but form one conjoint illuminated area in front of the car, being the right aimed side slightly higher then the left. A nice example would be the picture http://www.hella-press.com/picts/108989.jpg .

I just would like to use the opportunity to ask if anybody knows how to adjust the headlights on a Grand Prix 2000, cause I don't get much light if I don't use the foglamps. Thanks.

Although you might not understand the text, the pictures are quite nice, it is about German physics classes comparing different headlight concepts, being the left pictures always the actual technology and the right side pictures the proposed ones. Have fun ;-)
