Alcad gloss black base

One question for you guys that use Alcad paints. Is this a good base coat for carbon decals? and i thought i read somewhere on here that you still need to thin it? is this true.

Its just gloss black enamel,dries slowly.Use TS 14 or tamiya acrylic black x18.

Sure, you can undercoat CF decals with it, but as LS1Aaron pointed out, there's plenty of other options, too. As long as it's black and shiney, it'll work. My personal favorite is MM Acryl gloss black- I like the Acryl (over other acrylics because even the strongest seting solutions don't bother it (I've had Solvaset attack Gunze and Tamiya acrylics). Incedently, this is what I use to undercoat Alclad chrome. Sure, it's acrylic and you're suppose to undercoat with enamel- but Acryl is pretty tough stuff for acrylic, and I've never had trouble with it.

Well it says Alclad II Lacquer. So is it actually an enamel and they just call it that or is it actually a lacquer? And again do i need to thin it more?

The actual alclad metal paints are a lacquer,the base is enamel.Smell the two and you will notice a distinct difference.The base is also pre thinned for airbrush use.

I have to agree, do not use the Alclad black base. Go with the Tamiya or other preferred brand. When I tried the alclad black base I was really dissapointed in it. Took too long to dry.

Thanks guys i will not use it for that purpose. but now that i have it are there really any other uses for it?

Use it as a base coat for other Alclad paint.. It's why it is designed for !

That said, it's required only for Chrome and aluminium paint if I remember correctly.

Vric, it doesn't even work that well as a basecoat for their chrome paint. I tried it that way first. Used some Tamiya and got a shinier(sp) chrome coat from the Tamiya, and I didn't have to wait 2 weeks for it to dry unlike the alclad base.

So in conclusion Alclad II Lacquer gloss black base = weak

Tamiya TS as a base will make the chrome very fragile and easy to remove. It must be Enamel base. But I never tried Alclad black base, other enamel paints are cheaper and work perfectly.

The Slow drying time is in fact why Enamel work better with Alclad. The Lacquer can grip easier on fresh enamel paint than Lacquer Tamiya paint. It will make it stronger.

Vric, meant to ask you what you use as a base for alclad chrome? I agree cheaper alternatives are out their, but in your opinion, what have you used with satisfactory results?
