Flemke's Wheels
Hi Flemke,
How are you progressing with your new F1 wheels. Is it right you are getting them made by BBS? How on earth did you peruade them do do some for you as when I approched all of the major wheel manufacturers for a set of wheels for my stillborne replica they all said no chance. Even OZ would only supply me with a set if I agreed to buy 5 sets of wheels. Luckily I can get my 1/5 scale ones machined by a local toolmaker at very reasonable cost lol and they don't ned to withstand 240mph and the g forces that creates ha ha ha. carbuilder2002 |

Re: Flemke's Wheels
I was sure I have seen Flemke posting on this site as well and thought as seen as it was an F1 related topic would be better suited here.
Maybe I'm wrong? Oooppsss. carbuilder2002 |

Re: Flemke's Wheels
Aren't those wheels the standard BBS 3-piece motorsport wheels used on Prototypes and such? Made from magnesium and obviously able to withstand high g forces? If so, I would think any race team would be able to procure a set in the proper widths and offsets for an F1 (or any car for that matter).

Re: Flemke's Wheels
Apparently it's a bit more involved than that, and BBS is making a special set that can be used on the McLaren F1 as well as a few other exotics, to make it worth their while. It's definitely not readily available through motorsport channels.
carbuilder, what did flemke say? |

Re: Flemke's Wheels
carbuilder,
It was no problem finding a number of places that would build wheels for me. I could have got them CNC-machined from solid, or in two-piece or three-piece with forged centres (mag or aluminium), or in cast mag, forged mag, or an existing design with an altered centre to accomodate the centre-lock nut/drive pegs. The problem with BBS was that at the time they did not have the equipment to draw 19" hats in magnesium (although they do now). We had BBS make up a set in a standard design but with the F1 centre-lock in order to experiment with wheel and tyre sizes. You'll find a reasonable amount of discussion about the wheels on this thread, starting on page 54: www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?t=226933&f=23&h=0 A picture of the wheels that are currently on the car, although they will not be the final version: HTH |
