go with Yokohamas AVID V4S

If you want your tires to last then I would go with Yokohama tires. I bought a set of the Toyo proxies and they didn't even last 9 months. The tread wear on those tires sucks. So if you want all season peformance and good tread wear then go with the Yokohama AVID V4S tires. I just bought 4 for my Eclipse. Otherwise you can learn a 700.00 lesson and buy the Toyo's. Go check out the ratings on the Yokohamas on tirerack.com.

Re: Question about Rims and Tires

Hey guys, I know this in a old post, but had another couple questions. OK, so Im thinking of sticking with 17's and then getting the KYB/AGX Proline kit through club 3G. That way I can drop the car and not worry about rubbing with 18's. Also, Im gonna go to a tire shop and ask them this, but wanted to hear what you guys thought first. If you can put 245's on an 8" wide rim, why wouldnt you? I mean, if an 8" rim will fit our car, why not put the fattest rubber on it? Does it really make that much of a difference in width between 225 and 245? I know the tire itself is wider, but isnt the wheel what determines how wide the overall width?

Re: Question about Rims and Tires

this has to be the best write up on wheel and tire sizing.

http://www.club3g.com/forum/showthread.php?t=516

also, i have 18's and i don't rub. if you get the correct size tire, you won't rub with 18's

Re: Question about Rims and Tires

i was convinced by a study (by a car magazine of sorts) that 17" rims are the best for handling, and i will not go w/ 18"'s unless they are for show, because i want my car to handle well

please correct me if i'm wrong though

i do think 18's look sick on 3g's... especially gunmetal w/ a chrome lip on a pearl white 03+

Re: Question about Rims and Tires

As far as I know handeling all has to do with your sidewall. Lower profile tires do not corner as well as like 50's do because they dont roll over at all, they just break loose. The only performance loss you would notice is the extra weight of the 18's. Unless you get some $$ super lightweight ones.

Re: Question about Rims and Tires

huh, i'll have to look it up... it said that 18" rims and higher did nothing as far as cornering goes... 17"s were the perfect balance between size and were the best choice for applying tires...

as far as the rest goes i don't kno, i just got it off hearsay, but i'll def. look it up

18's would look sweet

Re: Question about Rims and Tires

you can fit 18's but to avoid rubbing issues i would stretch the tires.

Re: Question about Rims and Tires

17's are better for cornering and for putting down better times at the track. smaller wheel, less rotating mass. but it doesn't make that big of a difference.

Re: Question about Rims and Tires

ok i realize im bringing back the dead on this one. 1 question, should my 215/50/17's be rubbing on a car droped like 2in? Just rubbing the plastic wheel well at front. Still an inch or more of clearence between the wheel and frame crossmember so not woried about hitting that. But will be pulling the plastics out when i put my kit on.

note:bumpper is slightly mishapen and only rubs on dented side.

Re: Question about Rims and Tires

Ive got the Eibach Proline kit and it doesnt come close to rubbing anywhere with my stock wheels and tires. Granted, 2" is a little more than what Ive got on mine, but I could probably cut 2 coils off the front springs and still have clearance.
