xj coolant question

i had a 98 xj8 come in to my shop the other day and the coolant was a milky white color...does anyone know what this is about? i thought all jags used OEM orange coolant. ive never seen this before and no one i talked to has either. does anybody know about this? it seemed like it had a waxy residue, and was kind of the color of water and flour mixed...

Re: xj coolant question

Sounds like it could be cooling system suppliment. It is basicly water soluble oil. Napa used to have Mac's 13. My quick search didn't find it. Have you seen that same color and consistecy of stuff used by machinist to cool and wash as parts are worked on? I doubt that the coolant is recommended by any manufacture. The owner probably knows better than the entire SAE and wouldn't consider any other formula. This could be the same product that makes identicle claims of being a waterpump lubricant.

Re: xj coolant question

With that supplement, would you know if their is any wax or parifin? The cap on the pressure resivoir was coated with almost a half inch thick build up of a waxy substance. Their was also lots of chunks of that waxy substance floating in the coolant. We tested the strength of it, and it showed good to -34 degrees fairenheight. The owner has no knowledge of any substance being added to the cooling system.

This barsLeak has the same words anti-rust and waterpump lubricant. I guess it might not hurt anything. Who needs their waterpump seal and thermostat lubricated?

Evidently the Jag has anti-freeze in the cooling system.

I have read some threads about permenant anti-freeze doing something similar to the parifin with pictures of partialy blocked water passages.

I would recommend flushing and refilling yet be concerned that it might be blamed for the next failure. No doubt something is about to go wrong with every 98 Jag.

Re: xj coolant question

ok thanks for the help. i looked into it a little bit further and supposedly its just an additive you can add to water to basically make it into coolant. seems kind of useful and bad at the same time, as in its cheap and easy, but sounds like it wouldnt have the rust inhibitors and stuff coolant has and also if the wax would collect and clog the rad. passages. anyways thanks

Re: xj coolant question

It could also be the water pump blades. The original water pumps had ceramic parts which disintergrated eventually causing the water to turn white.
