'93 Grand Marquis Electrical Problem

When I bought it the steering column was disassembled because the iginition switch needed to replaced..

I was driving into a parking lot, the car died as i was driving and then wouldn't start again.

I believe its an electrical problem for several reasons:

1. I believe there might of been exposed wires in the steering columns because i frequently heard the 'popping' sound when two wires touch that shouldn't when they spark.

2. My headunit and clock have no power, yet the cigar lighter does, and they're on the same fuse.

3. The lights in the car no longer shut off when all the doors are closed, they stay on until the battery dies.

Its not the fuel cut off switch/inertia switch, I checked but it wasn't triggered.

While I'm sure this could also just be a bad fuel pump, with all of the issues with the electrical, it doesn't seem likely. All the fuses were checked, nothing is blown.

Any help?

Re: '93 Grand Marquis Electrical Problem

Where you turn the key the tumbler turns a push rod which goes to the ignition switch you don't have to remove the column to replace. If you try to replace it you will need to buy a set of tamper proof torx sockets. Ford recalled a bunch of cars because of this ignition switch. If you use a flashlight and look at it look at the two bolts a tamper proof has a little rod in the center and about six sides look at a torx screwdriver. The dealer uses another bolt and I had to use small channel locks to remove. Probably somebody tried to steal the car. If original equipment replace.Make sure to watch the slight corrision so it is set identical with the old one or it won't work properly.
Jack up the car and their are fuseable links by the starter more than likely one of these burnt up. Go to a junk yard and purchase some. If you use crimp connections buy a good quality tool to crimp them. Make sure you match colors as they are rated different. try to get from a newer car.Coat the ends with silicion to keep out dirt and moisture. Make sure to tape good and carry a spare if you ever get stranded. Preferbly use heat shrink tape.
Hitachy tools sells an electrical connection which is like a bar with holes in it and two set screws to hold the connection together. Wall mart sells some which use a cap to lock check wire size. they have a hole in each end with screw caps. A pointed bar is in the center and the wire spreads and the cap holds with the wire in place.
