85 grand marquis stalls and wont start after about 10 miles

I have a 1985 Grand Marquis that starts perfectly in the morning but after about 10 miles of driving it will stall. It doesn't matter if I am at a stop or moving. It feels and sounds like it's out of gas. After it stalls it will not start for anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or more. I replaced the ignition module (distributor mounted) and the voltage regulator on the advise of a self proclaimed "expert" but I still have the same problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is the 5.0 Liter engine, right? Sounds like the symptoms of a bad "Hall Effect Sensor". There are many posts about it, both here and in (I think) the Mustang forurm.

Basically, there's a sensor in your distributor that tells the coil when to fire, and when it goes bad it works erratically as you've described. Time for a replacement.

when I was driving a cab one day my car kept stalling at every stop I made. turned out it was a dirty fuel filter.

Ok the one thing most people overlook (myself included) is the pickup coil in the distributor that little (bleep bleep) cost me over 300 dollars in other repairs before I replaced it (a 25 dollar part) of course I did have to take the distributor out and to the shop and have the gear pressed off (in 26 years of working on cars this was the only one that I have encountered the drive gear for the distributor pressed on) all others I would just remove the rollpin and start twisting it till it finally cleaned off enough to remove.

It was causing my 86 GM to just shut off and it would take anywhere from 15 - 30 minutes or longer if it was a 90+ deg. day before it would restart.

Wiggle the wires to the distributor does this effect the motor. I had a 5.0 liter t-bird and I had to replace the wires. I would try a rebuilt distributor with new electrical parts. Turn the motor until the rotor comes to a mark in the side of the distributor mark it with white out. Then pull the distributor buy a rebuilt one and remark the new unit. This saves time it will turn a little so you can get it in then set the mark. Be very careful or you will have to retime the engine. A single plug by the dist has to be unplugged to do this.
You can't install the part without a puller. I have found a loose ground wire for the computer, this can cause problems.Pull the pass side cover by where your right foot would go the computer and ground are very close. EEc relay should also be close with fuel tank relay in the trunk by the pass side hinge.
