97 Taurus gauge question

Hi i have a 97 taurus GL and i am trying to replace the interior gauges to the lighted ones. I saw some selling on ebay and they are for the SE model. Is the gauges same on the SE and the GL? Also did anyone ever have the problem of gauges reading different after they replace them? For example, you are going 40 mph and it reads 50 mph, something like that, did that ever happen to anyone? Just trying to get some information before i actually replace them. Thanks

Re: 97 Taurus gauge question

Are you referring to the backlight or electroluminance type guages? If so, you don't actually get the guages, just an overlay for your existing guage cluster. You will be instructed to carefully remove the needles from your existing guages, apply the overlay, then place the needles back in their original position. As long as you get the guages back right, they should remain as accurate as they currently are.

As for differences in guage layout between the models, I cannot help you there. That sounds like a good question for the seller.

Re: 97 Taurus gauge question

I had a speedo that was way off. Pulled out the cluster, took off the front plastic lense and pulled out the speedometer needle. Had someone else drive in front of me down the highway with their cruise set at 60mph. Set my cruise to match and carefully put the needle back in pointing to 60. I did have a passenger in my car with me to watch the road and have a hand on the steering wheel, just for a little extra safety. Back home pulled out the cluster again to reattach the lense and put everything back together.

Re: 97 Taurus gauge question

you don't have to remove the needles to put the gauge faces on.

Also, the GL and SE DO NOT have the same cluster, the SE has a 120 mph speedo while the GL has a 110 mph one, so the speedo will be off.
