chkn' pulse- 01Taurus squeak- near valves?

Hello! I just registerd to these forums, lookin to see how active it is.

I have been searching for clues to fix a problem with the car on my day off, about to step out for lunch. After bumpn'round on google this and that today, I came across a thread which almost perfectly described the problem I am having - so I decided to drop in and and search for a fix.

to the point: 2001 Taurus has this (now overly irritating) sqeaking noise near the top drivers side of the engine. Scared me to death as it sounds to be coming from the valves! I've checked the serpantine belt, even changed it, as it was worn; this doesn't sound like your average everyday belt sqealing noise. this noise is from the opposite side of the engine. This wretched sound speeds up when I accelerate, and really doesn't seem to be so conected to engine temperature- it is now constant. <--perfect description (smiles for the win)

At first, a couple weeks ago I decided to change the oil trying to remedy the situation, using the manuals reccomendation of 5w-20. I thought this fixed the problem, it did seem to quiet the noise just a bit- then perhaps my mind played a little trick on me, I just don't know. I considered changing to a heavier oil, my thought is there- "perhaps the 5w-20 isn't heavy enough to stay up inside the engine to keep everything lubricated." I'm no expert, and I don't know why I'm trying to convince myself that I am. Am I even logical (maybe another topic another time)

enough of the rambling, 2 items that jumped out at me this morning as I searched the web were:

1. cam position sensor
2. cam sensor synchronizer assembly

I hope someone has a thoughts- I need a sandwhich, I'll be back to chk ina bit.

a quick edit: anyone think I might be on the right track?

Welcome aboard Rorche, nice to have you with us. You picked the right forum because we have some expert pros here. I'm a DIY'er with very limited expertise but I'm certain one of the pros can tell you exactly what it is, so hang tight and one of them will get to ya' shortly.

I'm not a pro on the cam synchronizer, but I've been following this group long enough to know that certainly seems to match your description. Any check engine light yet?

Hopefully way2old will chime in with his thoughts.

Sounds like you are correct on the cam sensor. When you remove it, look at the syncronizer. There should be a metal "C" shaped piece that triggers the sensor as to when to fire the injectors for sequential injection. If the little "C"shaped piece is broken or bent, the syncronizer needs replaced also. The syncronizer needs to be "timed" correctly to make the sensor send the correct signal to the PCM. If you mark the syncronizer carefully upon removal, you can install it back in the same position. The syncronizer will spin as you remove it when the gears disengage each other. It is not a terribly hard job, but the sybcronizer assembly is fairly pricey. Good luck and let us know if further help is needed. And I too add my welcome. Glad you found us.
