93 jeep cherokee i6 hard start in mornings

Hello Board Members

I have a 93 cherokee w/ an i6 4.0 liter. It is very hard to start especially in the mornings. What could be the cause of this since I have tried a couple simple things and no resolve could any one help. Probably this has been asked 100 times before.

Thanks
AL

Re: 93 jeep cherokee i6 hard start in mornings

My 99 I6 had a fuel pump problem. My mechanic said the fuel leaked back into the tank when it was sitting for a while. Once I turned the key for a bit it finally got back to preasure and the would car start. Eventually it went away. Dont know if that was actually the problem or not but it's a start!

More like a 1,000 times. You need to explain "hard to start" better and list what have you done so far.

Re: 93 jeep cherokee i6 hard start in mornings

Hard to start in the mornings have to crank the engine for a fue good seconds in order for it to start. Before it would start right up. Changed cap and rotor checked spark plugs they are burning clean. I checked the fuel pressure it was 27 pounds at start up. I am going to change the fuel filter next. I have tried turning the key to on and letting the fuel pressure build up but it still did the same thing. Any ideas?

Re: 93 jeep cherokee i6 hard start in mornings

When you get in this vehicle in the morning which you said was your hardest starting time.

Pump excellerater 3 or 4 good pumps , then hit key to start it. If she starts right up, then your getting gas drain off overnight. If she is a little flooded then ' that,s not the problem.

If she does start right up after pumping it could possibly be fuel pump problems or dirty fuel injectors and maybe vacuum line leaking somewhere.

I,m no expert but there is basic diagnosis you can try to eliminate things.
Also moisture build up overnight on ignition wires, cap, rotor ect. How old are spark plug wires? If it,s a moisture problem you,ll notice as the vehicle warms up she runs better. Heat from engine block is removeing moisture.

Re: 93 jeep cherokee i6 hard start in mornings

I have been looking at this problem over the weekend. I put a fuel pressure gauge on another jeep and see that the fuel pressure comes up right away. It takes about 10 sec for mine to come up. So I go to see if the pump is pumping right away as the key is turn but it takes about ten sec for the fuel pump to kick in. What would cause this delay?
Thanks AL

Have you checked to see if you're getting any computer codes?

Re: 93 jeep cherokee i6 hard start in mornings

OK so I have the codes scanned nothing it is good.
But started to look closer in to the problem. When I turn the ign key on
I don't get an engine light on my dash and the fuel relay will not click nor
does the fuel pump come on. I try to start it and it just cranks.
I cycle the key a couple times to the on and off position then I get the
engine light to come on and then you hear the relay click and the fuel pump come on then the car starts with no problems. Could this be the ECM/PCM?

Thanks
AL

Re: 93 jeep cherokee i6 hard start in mornings

well fixed the problem by replacing the PCM/ECM would not send the signal for the fuel pump relay.
Thanks and hope this can help someone with the same problem
