Steering Column Disassembly 99 LTZ
99 Lumina LTZ with column shift.
Need to replace the multifunction switch inside the steering column. Removed the air bag. Made a puller and got the steering wheel off. Removed the "jesus" clip and took the air bag coil came off. Down to the black stamped steel disc with notches for locking the steering wheel. It appears to be pressed on, but I am not sure. I don't want to bend it up getting it apart. 1. What is the trick to get the disc off? 2. When it comes off, how do I put it back on? 3. Am I into any more surprises when I get the disc off and go to remove the switch? 4. Do I need any more special tools? Any advice will be appreciated. |

Re: Steering Column Disassembly 99 LTZ
press the locking plate in, there is a round snap ring deep in the bottom, small flathead pops it out. be aware that the plate may pop right out with it.
getting it back in may require a friend with strong thumbs, or a piece of bar stock metal bent in a square "u",with a bolt hole drilled in the center, use as a press with the steering wheel nut to push in the plate while you put the snap ring back in. you may want to note the exact placement of the plate for proper reassembly, some have multiple notches (couple left, couple right). under this plate sits the blinker switch, good time to replace the kick off springs if they are broken! hope this helps zschoche |

Re: Steering Column Disassembly 99 LTZ
He's right, it's in a recessed hole, so it's hard to see. They make a $5'ish tool that is used to remove that plate, available at most all retail parts stores. I believe it may be available at Auto Zone in their free tool loan program.
