Re: Budget Performance Mods

there is some parasitic loss from just having to spin the weight of the pulley but its not much.

Hey if I just disconnect my powersteering belt wouldn't that be 95% as good as swaping out the power rack for a manual? I mean supposing the factory power steering ratio didn't bother me. Or would I just be drasticly increasing the wear on my disconnected power rack and end up having to replace it pretty quick ;_;

I played around today with the car killing the engine and different speeds and getting a feel for my ratio when unassisted, I liked it much better that way even at low speeds.

also, what would the rice factor be on something like that?
it wont hurt. as long as you cap off the fittings so the rack keeps some fluid to lubricate you should be fine.

as far as the rice factor, id say its all according to the size of your ego. if you truly like not having it, then more power to you. if you suffer thru not having p/s just for the 3hp gain, then its rice.

Re: Budget Performance Mods

Yeah wow nice, horsepower/milage nothing I just like driving the car this way. My roommate has a 2005 lotus elise that I get to play with sometimes (no p/s on those) after a couple minutes driving that any one would fall in love with unassisted steering.

Cap off the fittings? All I did was remove the belt.. So the fluid is all there and just gets pushed through the pump as I turn the wheel. My concern was that maybe the teeth on the P/S rack might not be designed to handle all of the force on them as I turn. Without the P/S there's going to be 2-4 times as much force (from me turning the wheel) on those teeth than normal because the fluid won't be pushing it back and forth any more.

Ok ok I said this once long time ago but I will say it again.

DO Not ever, ever, ever remove the Power Steering from a 240sx. Unless you’re an idiot who is waiting for a catastrophe to happen.

Why? Glad you asked…

The stock 240sx NEVER came with a MANUAL rack and pinion steering rack. So as a result, the unit and the steering shaft (connects the steering wheel to the rack) is thinner and weaker then MANUAL rack.

The steering shaft will BREAK, and u will end up driving into a house or in my case a spin out at the track.

The stock million years old steering shaft is already OLD

The pump assistant is needed to make the rack function probably, its Frkn designed with that in mined!

The car is HEAVY and when its in a drift or hard cornering u will NOT NOT be able to make the car turn, in another words, the car will drive you all that u can do is hold on.

Yeas, I had no P/W on my car at first (its was 89 W/SR20) I drove my car at the track and canyons. All that I did was drive the car but I could not push it to the limit, and when I get the back sliding, my Steering Wheel becomes un controllable and it just spins which ever way it wants ie, spin out.

Finally, I crashed my car bcs the Steering shaft on my car snapped. I have a nismo solid unit now with P/S. http://www.takakaira.com/asp/templat...NnJkKkfhGielHg

The only time u might consider removing the P/S is when u has a track ONLLY DRAG car!

NEVER advise someone to remove the P/S out of their cars unless u want to be held liable to the damage that innocent advice will cause.

Re: Budget Performance Mods

yep, thats for most cars, not just 240's. The only way to actually and reliably eliminate PS is to buy/modify a manual steering rack. If not, your shit will blow out and either A, it will lock/be uncontralable, or you will have 6" or steering play left-right. I wouldnt recommend removing the PS, unless you do it right.
