Question 97 Grand Prix GTP, Engine Miss Stupmed?

I have got a 1997 GTP with the SC 3.8. About two weeks ago, it developed a miss under load or acceleration. Yesterday, I changed the plugs and the #2 plugs electrode was burnt away. I thought I had fixed my miss but that didn't change it. Driving it for two weeks with a miss is what burnt that plug because the miss kept getting worse and now it is like it was two weeks ago. I have ohmed the injectors and 4 were 14ohms and 2 were 15ohms (good). I changed the fuel filter because I never had in the past six years and it was pretty sh!!ty. I could hardly blow through it. However, it didn't fix the problem but lets me know my fuel pump works well to push fuel through that bad filter. I am pretty good with cars but I an stumped at this point. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks

Re: 97 Grand Prix GTP, Engine Miss Stupmed?

How old are the ignition wires? And what brand spark plugs did you use?

I'd try new wires first if they haven't been replaced. After that try swapping out the coil packs and see if the miss moves to another cylinder. Another possibility if the misfire is under load MAF sensor.

Any mods?

Welcome to AF.

They are the original wires. (no comments please) I will change the wires today. If that doesn't do it, is their a way to check coil packs. The only reason I knew which cylinder had a miss was because of the burnt plug. Thinking about it now, the wires have a pretty good chance of being bad. (10 years old and 180,000 miles, poor things). I'll get those changed today and post tonight. The plugs were Champion Platinum (.060)
Thanks again

You can check the coil packs, but even a bad one is likely to show good. This is especially true if it's heat related. I'm with Bnaylor, I'd swap coil packs and see if the miss moves..

180K on the wires? I was lucky to see 80K on them before they start acting up. That supercharger gives off a lot of heat.

You should can the Champion spark plugs. Get the AC Delco OEM Platinums or Iridiums. Autolite or NGKs would be another good choice.

Let us know what you find. Good luck.

yeah my gtp had stock plugs and wires when I got it. At that point it had 120k... and still performing well. They make those suckers to last.

I wonder why they ran the plug wires right over the S/C? I was working on one the other day and touched the s/c after a good run, OUCH!

Thumbs up Re: 97 Grand Prix GTP, Engine Miss Stupmed?

I replaced the spark plug wires and everything is well. I guess I'm good for another 180,000 miles. Just kidding

Re: 97 Grand Prix GTP, Engine Miss Stupmed?

Thanks for the feedback. We'll put you into our record books for having the highest mileage on OEM plug wires in a GTP.
