94 check engine light
Hi, I’ve got a ’94 Grand Marquis with about 120,000 miles on it, and just recently the check engine light has started coming on. It only comes on when I bring the car up to speed, 60 mph or more. Sometimes it goes off after a few minutes, then it will come back on a few minutes later, sometimes it only goes off when I slow down below 60, and sometimes it stays on until I kill the engine. It never blinks its always on solid. Anyone have any ideas what my problem might be?

Re: 94 check engine light
You will have to find out what codes the check engine light is giving you.
With the key off place a jumper wire between STI wire and pin 2 of the EEC IV connector. Turn the key on, engine off and your check engine light will flash the codes, write them down and post them here. Read this. http://zenseeker.net/4x4/EECIV.htm Or buy a unit like this that will give you the codes. http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/epi3145.html Quote:

See my post on 92 GM stalls at idle. My engine light was coming on and off like you describe for years and there was no noticeable performance change. Finally, the engine light would come on and the car began stalling at idle, running terribly, then ok.

Re: 94 check engine light
I would start by cleaning the MAF sensor (00059.html) to see if the 189 code goes away. For codes 332, and 337, I would start with a can of Seafoam down the pcv hose with engine warmed up. If that did not help I would check the hoses going to the PFE sensor. Then I would do as directed in the link below(00015.html) along with checking the egr valve to make sure that it is working. If none of that fixed the problem, I would replace the PFE sensor (00160.html).

Re: 94 check engine light
Thanks for all the advice, its going to be a couple of days before I can put it to use. Question about the seafoam treatment, I’ve heard it causes some smoke, does it cause so much that I probably shouldn’t do it in a residential neighborhood?

Re: 94 check engine light
It smokes like crazy, not so much at first but after you let it sit since the whole idea is to get it in the motor as fast as you can so that most of it stays in the motor. The white smoke looks like a car with a fully blown head gasket. I would find an out of the way parking lot to do it in, as this time of the year some people have their windows open. This stuff takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes to get out of the system and you should let it sit in the motor for 15 minutes, make sure that you have 45 minutes to an hour to kill when you do this. The best way to get it in the motor on your car is to remove the hose from the pcv valve leaving the valve in the valve cover. You might also want to find a cap from something like gear oil or Lucas motor oil treatment that comes to a point, so that you can stick it into the pcv hose as the wide opening makes it much easier to dump the seafoam into the hose without spilling it all over the place.
