'95 740il radio problem

I bought a '95 740il about 9 months ago. When i bought it niether the radio or the tape deck worked, but I was planning on using cds so it didn't bother me. I was recently given an xm/mp3 player for my b-day. The problem is, the only way it works in the car is either through a radio station, or the tape deck. Niether work. I tried both am and fm on the radio and its silent, no static or noise comes out at all. The tape deck keeps trying to play the tape but no sounds comes out, then it flips the tape and tries the other side. It does that until i take the tape out, and i've tried a couple different tapes. Does anybody have any suggestions on what to do. If there is another way to hook up the player or if there is a way to fix any one of these problems.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
