Fuel Gauge fluxuates alot .

Hi

Can any one have any suggestion on problems with the fuel gauge, I have a 2000 GMC jimmy with aprox. 62k miles.

Every time i start the car the fuel gauge needle bounches between E and F about twice and then it stays at half. The Truck has about little more then a 3/4 of a tank gas. I am currently driving by counting the miles , the gauge is not relaible. I try dry gas it dod not do anything , when the tank aproaches towards below a quarter the gauge goes crazy back and forth from e - f again.

If any one have any suggestions please let me know i apprecaited ..

Re: Fuel Gauge fluxuates alot .

Hi, I have a similar problem which may or may not be related to a thread I recently posted about an intermittent starting problem. I got my 2000 Jimmy with 80k miles on it and the fuel gauge seems to work when i have between 3/4 to a full tank. After that it occassionally bounces back and forth from E to F or just bounces randomly, depending on its mood I guess. I've been told it's due to a bad ground connection. I haven't checked yet but I guess there is a wire that goes from the top of the tank (top of fuel pump) to the rear of the truck, either the bumper or frame. Let me know if that gets you anywhere, I also have been using the tripometer for the past 2 years, filling up after about 200 miles.

my gas gauge did that when i bought my 99 jimmy and the guy who fixed it said it was the sending unit. one of the 3 little teeth broke off and was giving it a false reading.

I also have had this problem, I replaced the sending unit mounted to the fuel pump assembly in the tank and that took care of it.
I never did find a bad ground and all connectors appeared to be intact.
