88 G.M. starts then dies

Yeah, I have a small problem, my 88 Grand Marquis will start and then die, if i give it a little gas it is fine, and rides with no problem. I have recently had a full tune up, changed the alternator, and the battery. any ideas?

Does you car have a distributor?
Are the battery cables corroded?
Why was the Alternator changed?

Re: 88 G.M. starts then dies

it has a distributer, the alternator was changed because it was not pumping out enough voltage and the battery cables are not corroded much, but there is a small break in the wires leading to the terminals

Break in the wires? Hmmm I'd fix that first. On some of these, if there's a little corrosion on the battery cables it'll kill the whole thing and eventually stop running entirely.

You may also want to look for vacuum leaks. Is there hissing from near the brake pedal? Also, does it idle ok or does it shake and die at stoplights? It could also be the idle air valve.

Re: 88 G.M. starts then dies

Check out the thread, "Torque converter/lockup" that I started, it's on page 2 right now a little down from the top. Has good info from Samurai about the vacuum leak under the dash.

Also, check the thread, "stalling at red lights", started by Cobradude, a bit above mine. That could also be your problem.

Hope these help out.

(Mine would occasionally idle fine also, but it got progressively worse; once these 2 things were taken care of, it was like a new car in comparison)

I would also suggest you look at the idle air valve and the map sensor, these are common problem areas, that hissing could be a bad auto brake off switch but would possibly have rough idle.

Re: 88 G.M. starts then dies

well from the investigating ive done trying to solve a similar problem with my 87 it would seem its possibly the idle air valve or the fuel pressure regulator , if anyone else has any ideas id love to hear em cuz i really dont wanna spend alot of money to fix this
