97 Laredo - Clanking sound when turned off

I have a 1997 JGC Laredo which has recently started making a wierd clanking sound everytime I turn it off. The sound seems to come from the rear, passenger side. Any ideas what this may be? Should I be concerned about it?

When you turn the engine off you get a clanking noise from the rear?

Yes, it sounds like it is coming from the rear passenger side.

may sound dumb, but did you try listening to the power window or lock on that side (most time lock actuator beofre window)? I know some cars get pretty loud when going bad and when key is turned off, and door is being unlocked they create quite a irritating sound.

I haven't noticed any odd sounds when rolling the windows down or when the locks engage, but I will take a closer listen just in case.

Ok, I've done some more digging into this and it appears that the sound is coming from the front on my jeep, not the rear. It looks like the entire engine basically shakes when it is turned off. Is this something I should be concerned about? How could I go about fixing this?

Re: 97 Laredo - Clanking sound when turned off

Is it a "Metalic" pinging type sound, sounds like someone tapping lightly on a piece of metal with a hammer?
If so, it is the exhaust system cooling down. As the system cools down the joints creak, that could be the sounds you are hearing. About 1/2 of the vehicles I've had do this. My Jeep makes the sound sometimes.

Unfortunately this is not what I am hearing. My Jeep does this sometimes so I know what you are talking about. The sound I have started hearing is a lound clanking/clunking sound. I was looking at the engine compartment when the Jeep is turned off and the engine shakes as this sound is made. It seems that the engine is loose or something. Is this possible?

Prolly bad Motor Mounts. Have them replaced, you could prolly do it yourself take you maybe an hour. Not very hard.

Re: 97 Laredo - Clanking sound when turned off

converter on exhaust has a 2 piece heat shield on it just behind the engine. They are tak welded on the converter. if the welds get old they break and the top half just lays on the converter causing a clanking or rattling sound. if engine shakes it will also shake the exhaust causing the rattle. shields ussually are not that important and can be removed even if still held by one or two welds. I'd give it a look.
