Upgrades?

I am looking for the cheapest upgrades for my truck to increase performance and decrease fuel consumption, any suggestions? Two that I keep hearing are a K&N filter, and a chip, but I am not sure thats the way to go. I see chips on ebay for $25, but are they even worth the $.02 the plastic is worth?

Re: Upgrades?

I'd say the "cheapest" upgrades for the Gen III V8's would be a new air intake (K&N FIPK, AIRAID, or Volant...whichever floats your boat), and perhaps a catback system. Both of these will run you about $200 depending on where you purchase.

And those are just the performance mods...

Re: Upgrades?

Don't buy so-called 'chips' off of e-bay. You never know what you're plugging in.

Get a wait4metune, $75-$160 to program it exactly the way you want it.

Re: Upgrades?

I'd consider Nelson for tuning. I've been trying to contact Wait4Me nearly 2 months with no success or callbacks/replied e-mails. I emailed Allen Nelson and in 2 days had a reply.

We've had two trucks tuned by wait4me and both of them were pretty much junk. The first one had an unbelievable amount of knock retard across the board and the second one was setup with the rev limiter before the shift points. Now why the hell that was, I'll never know.

Wait4me is cheaper than Nelson, but this is a simple case of you get what you pay for.

You need to get more air into your engine which means more hp AND better fuel economy which means you need an intake system first and foremost. Most of them do pretty much the same thing. Some pull air from down low like a scoop, but you'll pay more for those. Tests have shown that the stockk airboxes flow good, it's the filter and the passage tube to the throttle body that present the most restrictions. Look at the True Flow intake kits. Good price, lots of air.

If you get a tune, go with Nelson. Why? Try to find a customer that is unhappy with him. Now go and see how many complaints you get for Wait4Me's and some of the other ones. Allen's not cheap but he's the best and he gives free retunes for life.

Do it once, do it right.
