PCV Valve change on 89Civic

Does anyone know what the trick is, on how to remove the rubber hose that connects the PCV valve (the top part that looks like a candy cane). Mine was so solidly clamped by the metal ring clamp, that after moving the clamp ring away using pliers, the rubber hose (may be from aging) seems to be like glued to the PCV valve. I am afraid if I pull the hose too much, it might tear off.

not much you can do with a seized hose. its probly been in the car since it left the factory so you might as well spend the 15 dollars tops for a new one. should you decide to buy a new hose you can then pull the hose and if it tears oh well. when taking my old hoses out i used a flathead screwdriver and just pushed it thru the rubber and freed it up by workin it underneath.

Re: PCV Valve change on 89Civic

broke my hose just the other day with this, same year civic, if you cut the hose just above the pcv, it will still have enough hose to clamp back down with no problem

Re: PCV Valve change on 89Civic

just twist the hose with a pair of pliers, it will break free. this is a common thing to happen.

Re: PCV Valve change on 89Civic

Stick a flat head in between the PCV valve and the rubber hose and try to pry it free. Try to save that hose...no one wants to spend 15 bucks on a new one. Jiggle the top of the hose as your prying and it should come free. To unscrew the PCV valve itself, i think you need a 12mm wrench. good luck

Re: PCV Valve change on 89Civic

i just changed mine and the top part broke on in the hose and the bottom was stuck in the rubber seat. i took a butter knife and bent the tip 90 degrees then wiggled it in between the lip of the pcv valve and and rubber seat then just went all the way around prying up a little bit at a time. it eventually came loose. the part that was stuck in the hose was easy, i just too my plyers and crunched the shit out of it till the pieces just fell out.

Re: PCV Valve change on 89Civic

Thanks guys. Your suggestions inspired me in bending one of the alluminium strip that is used for closing one of the slots at the back of a computer, to stick it in between the valve and the hose while pulling the hose up.

I have another problem. The PCV valve is very, very tight and wont budge - I do not want to force too much, in case I break it and cause more problems. Any suggestions how I can losen it to turn open. I am following the rule of righty tighty lefty loosen, for taking the valve out.

Re: PCV Valve change on 89Civic

Either use a 12mm (i think) wrench or try to fit a 12mm deep socket in there and use a ratchet. Try some liquid wrench or pb plaster if its really stuck, but it should be pretty easy to bust open...and remember lefty loosy.

Re: PCV Valve change on 89Civic

Thanks, but was more concerned about it breaking - Have heard a horror story on some other vehicle, where it broke. Excuse my ignorance but what is liquid wrench / pb plaster?? I am thinking of trying vinegar around the threads - It works on plumbing (stuck shower heads, taps, etc) !!

Re: PCV Valve change on 89Civic

I have an 89 Civic as well - bone stock. It looks like the PCV valve is located on the back side of the engine below the intake manifold. Does the intake have to be removed in order to replace the PCV valve?

Re: PCV Valve change on 89Civic

No you do not need to take the intake off. Use a socket wrench and turn left to undo the threads. My problem is, that it is stuck (probably they did not use anti sieze on the threads when it was installed). I do not want to apply too much pressure in fear of breaking it - Have heard horror stories about this on chrysler forum. Have still not applied the high grade wd40 that someone suggested.
