97 Laredo - A/C repair question

I think I need to replace either my a/c compressor or the a/c clutch. I was looking at the Haynes manual and it stated that I needed to get the a/c system drained at the shop before doing any repairs. Is this necessary? If so, is this something I can do myself or do I really need to take it to the shop to have the system drained and then again to have it refilled?

Enviromentally, Yes, you do have to take it to the shop and have the system evacuated, I do not think it cost very much to have the system evacuated. But U have drained the system myself, just holding the low-side strader valve in. But my system had a leak and their wasn't much in the system, take extreme cautionwhen doing this, do it in short burst. Remember that this might be illegal.

Since that is the case I will likely just take it to the shop. Thanks for the advice.
