Wont go into self-diagnostic mode.
i have a 1983 s-10 and the check engine light just came on. minor carb, exhaust and timing work was done and the light came on. car runs good at all speeds. grounded the aldl to go into diagnostic mode and it didnt. normally it does, the check engine light normally blinks and you can hear the solenoids clicking. now, the check engine light stays lit. no sound from the solenoids under the hood. could possibly be the timing disconnect connector, something around the carb or ECM fuse? or bad ECM. By the way, where is the ECM fuse? and the car runs good, just seems a little rich. thanks, any ideas would help!

I could be wrong but I don't think the 83 with a carb even has a computer in it. I know my 85 2.8 didn't. I was going to suggest that you disconnect the battery to reset the computer. I would look at the vac hose's and wire connections. Do you have an oil pressure gauge? If so check the sending unit to that and the engine temp sending unit.

thanks for the reply but it does have an ecm in it, located under the glovebox. its an 1983 chevy s-10, 2.8L, with varajet II e2se california emission carb. i disconnected the neg batt cable to clear the codes but the check engine light still comes up as soon as you start the truck. i'll check the wiring to the oil pressure and engine temp sensor but i dont think thats it. i havent had a chance to check things out much. im thinking it could be an ecm fuse, but where is the thing located. the fuse box is to the left of the steering column, but in the manuel it doesnt show the ecm fuse. thanks.

problem fixed. it was a fuse that was blown. i guess it was the ecm fuse. it was located under the hood in a nipple type fuse connector near the brake fluid on the firewall. thanks all.

Re: Wont go into self-diagnostic mode.
Purchased a California 1983 S-10 2.8 V6 three weeks ago. Check engine light is now on. Truck is running okay.
Jumped the aldl but did not get any codes, or solenoid clickings. The aldl wiring layout had all wires in the bottom row with one empty space between the last two on right corner. That layout looks different than the Chilton manual diagram. Apparently, the aldl was not going into self-diagnostic mode. Luckily, found this posting today. The truck also had the same rubber nipple glass fuse holder on the back firewall behind the brake fluid reservoir. The AGA 3 amp fuse was broken or blown. Replaced the fuse and the check engine light is now out. The truck is now running rich and slightly rough. Coincidence/suggestions? |
