Exhaust is Shot

My exhaust has bit the bullet. The CAT is still good...as far as I can tell, but everything back looks bad. At least one hole in everything, and a big loud hole in the y-pipe.

I need advice. I am one of the FEW that doesn't want a LOOOOUD car. I didn't mind the stock rumble that my GTP has always had, but I don't want to buy something that's going to wake the neighbors either. What should I go with? Where should I go?

Should I go ahead and change the CAT? I am at 130xxx

Money IS an object! An object that I don't have!

HELP!!!

Re: Exhaust is Shot

what year is your car? That will have a large impact on the need for a cat.

Re: Exhaust is Shot

What condition is the resonator and two mufflers in?

IMO - Just get the plumbing replaced and /or repaired.

The stock CAT is expensive but aftermarket like a Magnaflow Hi-Flow is relatively inexpensive. But if the CAT is known good? just keep it to save money.

Re: Exhaust is Shot

Ditto what Bob said. Your car isn't one of the problematic years.

Re: Exhaust is Shot

Thats funny (or maybe not) on the CAT convertor between the NA 3800 for that year and for the GTP. The GM CAT for the GTP is cheaper?

But honestly GM list price of $473.

I'd defintely use the old one if it checks out good or go for the aftermarket. Might as well get a performance increase even if marginal.

He didn't mention whether he had the u-bend delete.

Re: Exhaust is Shot

I plan on doing the ubend delete when I change stuff out. The resonator and two mufflers are pretty well gone. They have minor holes, but it seems like enough to change out to me. The y-pipe after the resonator is completely open.

I suppose it would make the most sense to just wait till the CAT goes bad, but I was also thinking I might save $$$ in the long haul doing it all at once. I was planning on getting the magnaflow CAT.

The biggest issue I have is knowing very little about aftermarket exhaust. I'm not a big NOISE guy. No Flowmasters for me. I don't mind a car to have some balls, but I don't want to have to scream over it when I'm on the phone. I've seen the dynomax super turbo for reasonable prices, but am a little scared that may be to loud for my taste.

I can buy that cheaper than whatever Midas wants to sell me.

Re: Exhaust is Shot

Man, dude that doesn't look good. Both mufflers and the resonator shot. It is kind of hard coming up with an answer because of the noise and cost factor. The Dynomax ST will be louder than stock. It looks like the only part of your exhaust that will be salvageable is the downpipe and CAT convertor. To get it fixed properly you're looking at shelling out some bucks.

Sorry to keep beating what may be a dead horse, but how much louder than stock is the Dynomax setup? If stock is 0 and Flowmaster is 10...

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Exhaust is Shot

You're welcome. I'll let you be the judge. Here is a link to some exhaust sound clips.

http://www.rmcgp.com/exhaust/

All I know from my experiences is they are louder than stock and I do not like the sound of any of them.

BTW - Check into the Magnaflow hi-flow CAT. Even ZZP is pushing them now.

Re: Exhaust is Shot

Do you live in a high salt area??? That sounds like a lot of exhaust rusting. I live in Cleveland and no problems with the exhaust rust...........yet. Just wondering...... Also find a good smaller muffler shop, Midas is a rip off most of the time.

Yeah, Salt is wicked where I am. They lay it on thick when it gets icy here. I think it's worse here in So. Illinois than up north because of the amount of freezing winter rain we get. Our cars are all rusty and our roads are all pitted! Gotta love that!!!
