Exclamation New cylinder head...dangerous!!??

Hey I sure could use some imput on this quick, I work 3rd shift and I was telling this old guy I work w/ last night about all the things I was doing to my celica and he said that I should replace the rings, pistons and crank in the bottom if I'm going to keep it but put a new head on. He said the reason why is that basically the internals in the block wouldn't be able to keep up w/ the new head and I would just burn out the pistons. If ANYBODY has ANY imput on this I'd appreciate it. Let me know if this guy is just full of s*!t or if there's truth to it, cause I sure don't want to spend all this money just to have the car break down in a couple of weeks or months.

Re: New cylinder head...dangerous!!??

a new head is not going to add enough power to hurt the engine internals.

Re: New cylinder head...dangerous!!??

I'm not sure if he meant too much power, more along the lines of the internals just being older and worn to the current head and possibly wearing down faster because of the new part or I guess that's pretty much the same thing.

Re: New cylinder head...dangerous!!??

even if you get a 3 angle valve job on a swaped 3sgte head to the 5sfe block your internals can still handle it...you have an iron block with butterfly pistons capable of 350 to 400hp...youll be ok

Re: New cylinder head...dangerous!!??

Ok, thanks guys. I'm going to trust ya'll on this one and just slap the new head on there...............unless would the car run better and maybe pick back up any horses it may have lost through out it's years if I DO go ahead and put in new pistons, rings, and crankshaft?

Re: New cylinder head...dangerous!!??

an engine rebuild never hurts. your old pistons are prolly quite dirty and worn which causes friction and power loss. it should restore your engines power back to normal, or you could get high comp. pistons for extra power. if you are planning on turbocharging your engine in the future you could opt for forged pistons but theyre a little pricey. but as long as you have a good fresh set of stock internals youll still be ok to run low boost. how many miles on your engine?

Re: New cylinder head...dangerous!!??

How much are we talking when you say pricey on those forged internals? Right now there's almost 177,000 which from what I understand on one hand is pretty low for as old as it is but on the other (being a toyota w/ a supposed 300,000 mile expectancy) pretty sad that it's having so many problems w/ less than 200,000 miles. but what the hell do you expect when every person that's ever owned the car ragged the hell out of it?

Re: New cylinder head...dangerous!!??

yea my car has had like 4 owners, was wrecked, and stolen at one time before i bought it. its been beat all to hell. it has 178k on it and the engine gives me no problems but little crap like radiator, alternator, and electrical crap hjave gone wrong. i wrecked it a couple weeks ago though and bent the frame. going too fast on country back roads lol. its still driveable but pulls to one side like hell. it doenst look that bad with the body panels on though. im looking for another 5th gen gt/gt-s hatchback now for pretty cheap and see if i cant fix it up using parts from mine, cause the engine and all mechanicals are in decent shape.

Re: New cylinder head...dangerous!!??

damn... is that red one on your posts the one you wrecked? mine was wrecked too before i owned it... but you can't really tell except on the underside on the passenger side of the car like right in front of the rear quarter panel there's this huge dent w/ a couple of little holes in it from what looks like someone bottomed out on a curb or something... need to get that fixed and get it painted soon though cause those little holes are starting to rust a little. good thing though is that you can't even tell that the dent is there unless you either get down on your knees or if you're under the car.. btw how do you get a picture to show up on all of your posts like that?
