how many qts of trans on a filter change?

In the owners manual of my other car, it clearly states how many qts. of trans fluid is required to change the trans filter.
This 01' Cavalier 2.2L, the owners manual says unless you drive under Type II conditions, the trans does not require service for the life of the vehicle.
Trans fluid and filter is cheap insurance as this really doesn't make sense to me as it's Dexron III which has it's limits.
So can anyone tell me how many replacement qts. of trans fluid I'll need to change my trans filter?

Re: how many qts of trans on a filter change?

9.5 you gotta be kidding me!

My 92 LeSabre only takes 6.5 and the quick lube places only include 4 in the price of the change, anything over 4 and your paying the marked up price per qt.

First time, I told the manager that his ad didn't specify so he gave me the extra 2.5 but, late changed his policy (in fine print).

Well back to the store for another 6 qts. AND an extra oil pan (I only have a 4 qt. and don't want to be messing around w/trans fluid raining all over).

Thanks Jakegday

Re: how many qts of trans on a filter change?

Jake,

I wish I would have seen your second post before I got into this mess. I purchased 10qts based on your info.
I dropped the pan and got about 7.5qts.
So when I refilled, I put 7.5qts back in wondering what the hell is with the other 1.5qts per Jake.
So I pulled the drain plug on the front drivers side by the trans cooler line inlet/outlet. Got a little drain but, not much. I then realized that I'm either still low and the trans was low before I started (thus the 1.5qts short) or I got the wrong plug or both.
Finally found the correct plug and drained about 5qts. out til it leveled out and stopped draining. Then I realized that this level must be checked warm and after you run the trans through the gears. Not wanting to risk damage and now totally confused on how much this damn thing really takes and why the difference in what I've been told (9.5qts) by more than one source, I put back in 2qts. drove it, removed the plug and let it drain til level. Put the plug back in, threw away about 4qts. of trans fluid and call it good. By the time I was done spilling and measuring trans fluid, it might have come out to be about 4qts. (including filter, excluding convertor).

Re: how many qts of trans on a filter change?

I did that recntly too... The engine cannot be too hot or it cant be cold.... Yeah I wasted about $10 -15 of transmission fluid going through the plug. I was not happy that day. My problem was the same as yours I thought I did not have enough in there so I kept worrying there was not enough, so I pulled the plug and more fluid kept draining out. Urgh what a mess that was.
