Timing chain...cost of repair

My timing chain slipped on my S10 yesterday and my truck is in horrible shape right now. The "service engine soon" light was on and off and blinking the whole time and the few people I talked to said it needed to be towed to be fixed, or I'd ruin my engine. I really need to know what kind of cost I"m looking at to get this repaired. Any help would be great thanks!

To be able to help we need more info.
Year and engine and mileage to start with.
How do you know timing chain is bad?
Was it still runing or making a noise?
What isit doing or not doing?

It is a 2000 Chevy S10 Xtreme, 4 cyl, 80,000 miles. The truck was driving fine and then a split second later it was making this terrible sputtering, chugging, rattling noise from hood to tailgate. I pulled over opened my hood, my entire engine block was rocking and there was a burning smell. The service engine light came on, it was blinking, as soon as I put my foot on the gas, the truck would try to get going but just had no horse power. A couple of places I called said it was either a bad miss, the catalytic converter or the timing chain slipped (that was from 2 different places the timing chain). The truck starts right up when started but just shakes, rattles and chugs really bad. The exact way a go-cart sounds when its idling. At the moment its parked in my garage and I won't move it because everyone said it needs to towed or I'll make it worse by driving it. So now I'm debating what to do and if I need to have it towed to the dealer or what. Thought I would try here first.

Unless you are going to fix it yourself it would be safer to tow it in.
But I would say you are going need some proper testing to find out what the problem is.
No body can tell tou what it is over the phone or internet.
Remember proper testing.
Check codes fuel pressure and start with compression.
Has it got oil in it and good oil pressure?
Check engine light flashing or on?
A chain or gear jumped will give weak or no compression.
Also a true timing chain.
check with no 1 piston TDC compression no 4 cylinder valves should be rocking. One opening and one closing.
