How to Replace Radiator Cooling Fan

Hi , I have a '97 Sunfire , can someone tell me how to replace the radiator cooling fan, i dont know how to get it off.

Fig. 1: Remove the retaining bolt for the fan assembly

Fig. 2: Unplug the connector for the cooling fan and ...


Fig. 3: ... remove the fan assembly out the bottom of the vehicle
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Unfasten the cooling fan mounting bolt.
  4. Detach the fan electrical connector, then remove the coolant fan assembly out through the bottom of the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Raise the fan assembly into position through the bottom of the vehicle.
  2. Attach the fan electrical connector, then install the mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Disable the SIR system, as outlined in this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Properly drain the cooling system.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Detach the heater hoses from the heater core.
  6. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  7. Remove the instrument panel.
  8. Remove the DERM with the attaching bracket.
  9. Detach the heater core cover.
  10. Unfasten the heater core mounting clamps, then remove the heater core.
