4l60e Shifting hard
Sorry about that John! Alrighty, here's whats goin on...
Man my baby slams 1-2 gear shifts, im talking...SLAMS! Just got her back from the shop the other day from a rear main seal replacement, had a b&m kit installed with a full tranny flush (TC, everything blown out)...and man she's just slamming 1-2 now... 3-4 seem fine. Anywho, this is beyond the norm for a basic b&m shift kit... She threw on her SES light, so... Had her down at "Advanced Auto" here in my town, and she spat back 2 "p1870" codes...(the significance of two i dont know)...however I did my fair share of googling and found out this is a direct result of tranny slippage. (Common problem i read was the TC clutch wasnt locking up...) My question is...why the hell not toss a 2800 stall TC in there to solve my problem? 2400 should be optimal ehh?? I dont go hot rodding around. Yes, all fluids are fine btw. here's a picture of her... ![]() thanks guys/gals... I think my father's actually registered on this forum...he's made some gigantic post about his minivan, I saw him outside taking pictures of it and was wondering what the hell was going on! |

Re: 4l60e Shifting hard
Get a transgo shift reprogram kit. Your problems will go away like a fart in the wind.
I own a Turbo 350 Hydromatic. I looked at a B&M shift kit. They wanted 35 dollars for a valve body seal kit, a drill bit, instructions, and a sticker that says "B&M". Seemed i could do the same for less than 20 bucks at Fleet transmissions and get the same exact results or better. So i looked for more. When i focused on a transgo shift reprogram kit it included much much more than any other shift kit available for my transmission. It came with new servo springs, new shift accumulator springs, new GOV springs, and even more. You can get exact results for what the application is, no matter if you run a service truck, or a hi performance machine on a drag strip. And you can get a way better shift from transgo shift kit than you can with the B&M kit. When my fresh transmission rebuild started i couldnt get first gear to come back again after about 40MPH by hand shifting or by foot operated detent with a 273 rear end set. After the transgo shift kit, I can grab first virtually at any speed, although after 47MPH it does me no good. I never get a hard shift transition from first to second. Its nice and smooth. As for strength, it will break traction from 1st to 2nd. The rear end scoots about three inches to the right as the tires go "urrrrrk!. But it never "slams" into second and on detent never slams going from 2nd back to 1st. Its nice and smooth. I think a transgo shift reprogram kit might be exactly what you need. If you take a car just like yours, and run it side by side with a car with a transgo kit, They will gain at least half a fender on each shift, if the kit installer has a thought in their head. |

Re: 4l60e Shifting hard
The 1870 code refers back to basic transmission slippage and when the trans shifts hard it induces slippage which is what triggered the SES light. What you are describing is a known problem with these transmissions in many of the GM cars and trucks through these years. The problem is in the valvebody and AC Delco has released a updated revised unit that corrects this problem but is expensive A better option is to get one through Trans Star In Philly Pa for like half of what Delco wants for theirs. Valve Body Express has them also. Don't let someone tell you that you need a trans overhaul Any GM dealer will be able to provide you with service bullentin #597219 that will describe this problem in detail and the different GM cars affected May also be under the #99-07-30-005

Re: 4l60e Shifting hard
Thanks fellas...
I took her back down, had my kit removed. what happened was there was a selonoid behind the valve body that was getting stuck...all gunked up and crappy. Freed it up, and she's shifting semi-fine now... 1st to 2nd is perfect but now 2nd to 3rd takes so long...and 3rd to 4th is absolutley perfect... So now its just 2nd to 3rd being a PITA.
