1998 Silo life expectancy

We've owned our 1998 Sil. since its first miles.... and its been good, but we're recently hitting big repair bills..... work done includes transmission, alternator, fuel line issues, intake manifold, ...in fact, major repairs in the past week alone totalling 800 bucks. We're sitting at 109,000. We've been loyal on oil changes and standard maintenance. What is a good average miles and life expectancy for this vehicle?

Re: 1998 Silo life expectancy

I think you can get allot of miles from your Silhouette. The things you listed are common problems. The Alt. goes bad because after you stop your car the engine compartment heats up from all the heat not being able to escape. Had a Pontiac whose Alt. would go bad every year. I pulled off the hood insulation and never had a problem after that. Transmissions NEED their fluids changed every 15,000 to 20,000 miles. Silhouettes Intake manifolds always go bad. This is a comman thing IMO. The good thing is if you have a good mechanic fixing things you can count on them lasting awhile. Also Pay the extra for better parts. I have 2 Silhouette's. (1) is a 1993 with 255,000 and the other is a 1995 with 110,000. The 93 has had no BIG problems except for the Trannie at 200,000 and doesnt burn a drop of oil. Look at your oil from change to change. If its getting black then you may have some blowby and sometimes this means major engine wear. Synthetics are good because sludge buildup is kept minimal.
