Re: Jumping Transmission

Welcome to AF.

Other than the jumping and shaking how does the tranny work otherwise such as shifting. Any other driveability problems? Does it feel more like the engine is misfiring?

Re: Jumping Transmission

thanks...

shifting from 1-2 has been a little rough since i have owned it, but 2-3 is rough some of the time and the rest is fine, im really worried about shifting from park to reverse or drive as the entire car shakes sometimes very rough

Re: Jumping Transmission

Is it just harsh shifts? or does it bump, bump, bump when it goes into gear? 4T40/45E have the exact same pressure control solenoid as a 4T65E and can and do have the same problems. I would get it scanned for DTCs

It means the air intake temperature sensor is flaky. I have seen a defective IAT cause the tranny to act up. Any odb-ii DTC error codes should be resolved because it may affect the transmission. IAT is located on the air intake tubing before the throttle body and after the air filter box. Easy to replace.

Also, make sure the electrical connector to IAT is on properly.

Re: Jumping Transmission

I replaced the IAT sensor today and cleared the Service Engine light and after driving about 25 miles and turning the car off, the same error code came up and it started doing the same thing.

Re: Jumping Transmission

Sounds like the typical high line pressure that I've seen in alot of those units. If you dont have any codes stored, consider having your local transmission specialist check the line pressure. High line pressure can cause harsh P/N to gear engagement, harsh shifts between all gears, and eventually will burn the clutch packs out and you'll be left with no trans.

Re: Jumping Transmission

i just got back from vacation and took the alero in this morning, it turns out that there is a service bulletin for the IAT sensor and when it is replaced the connecting pig tail should also be replaced, FYI

Re: Jumping Transmission

I just had the same exact thing happen with my car, except all gear engagements were extremely harsh. My car has 65K miles on it, so not too far from where yours is at. They replaced the wiring up to the sensor and the sensor itself.

Re: Jumping Transmission

I just came in from the cold, fixing the same problem you guys are talking about. My 3.4L V6 01 Alero was hard shifting with the Service Engine light on. The Diagnostic Trouble Code was P0113: Intake Air Temperature Circut, High Input. Hoping for the easy fix I bought and installed a new IAT sensor (AKA: Air Charge Sensor) at AutoZone for $13.99, but it didn't help anything.

The problem was the wiring leading to the sensor had broken. The IAT sensor shares the same 5V reference voltage with the Coolant Sensor and the Throttle Position Sensor. When the wire broke at the IAT Sensor, the TPS signal got messed up telling the computer to up the transmission pressure to "protect" the transmission. (Even though it felt like it was destroying the transmission)

The solution to the problem was to order a new IAT Sensor connector pigtail, GM Part # 12102620/ AC Delco Part #PT307/ PICO Part # 5616. I found mine at bmotorsports.com for under $8.00 after shipping. Stagger your cuts on the pigtail wires, heat shrink both butt connectors, and re-apply some electrical tape and you'll be back to smooth shifting in no-time!
