89 Escort due for a major tune up...?

I have an 89 Escort (1.9 CFI) with almost 99k miles on it. I would like to know what should be done to keep the engine in good condition.

I'm reffering to like chaning the timing belt, water pump, etc. I haven't had any major problems yet... The car has been in the family since it was new; the only things that have been replaced are the timing belt (twice), water pump, spark plugs/wires, alternator, oil/filter, air filter, fuel filter and some sorf of attachment that goes on the side of the distrubitor (don't remember the name of it, but it required the use of a special tool just to remove one screw).

The car having 99k miles on it tells me that the car could have serious problems sometime soon and I would like to prevent that as much as possible. Not to mention that the car has started to surge every so often and has a rough idle at startup.

So if you know any problems the car is susceptible to please let me know. Thanks.

That's a very tough engine. Perhaps the single "weak" component is the ignition module (TFI ??) against the distributor. Maybe the fuel pump also if yours is electric (in tank?) ... but not sure.

I have carburetor version of the 1.9 that has ten times your mileage perhaps. One engine rebuild. Converted from mechanical to low pressure electric fuel pump. I've probably been thru 3 or 4 ignition modules.

Yeah thats it, it was the TFI that I replaced. The car has 99,000 miles with an electric fuel pump and now that you mentioned the fuel pump, its been making a humming sound for quite sometime.

I just remember that I've also replaced the thermostat , along with the thermostat sensor, transmission fluid & filter. I've also remember that the car has original O2 sensor so I should change that too.

I read a post a long time ago about changing the valve guides because they can fall in the cylinders or something, not sure if it affects my engine though...

If it ain't broke... don't fix it.

Keep up with the routine fluid changes, plugs/wires, etc. and you will be fine.

I'm pretty sure the intake valve insert problem only affected 2.0 litre SOHC engines.
