K&N Oil Filters

Are the K&N Oil filters worth the money? Has anyone used them and noticed a difference?

I normally just use AC Delco Oilfilters, or when out of town like i am now, whatever the quicklube place puts on until i can do the next oilchange.

My 93 GAGT 3.3L is at 110k miles so i am into "preservation" mode with the car looking for anything extra that will make it last longer.

Thanks,
Cad

Re: K&N Oil Filters

There are several good filters on the market today. Mobil 1, K&N, WIX even NAPA makes a good filter just to mention a few. Just stay away from the orange can of death (Fram) as they are really junk.

It is hard to beat your true on the road cold forced air from fender or grille area OEM air filter setup that is already on your car.
and AC-delco air filters are hard to beat.
After market wix best are good filters to
But usually AC-delco are cheaper priced.
Here is a link that may help.

Re: K&N Oil Filters

I use K&N oil/air filters.

I seen these Fram TG oil filters and they sounded like they were better than the standard Fram, they are cheapest.
So you get what you pay for here. I dont like AC-delco either.

I hav cut a couple different filters apart(AC and Fram) and the filter media was not attached inside alowing oil to blow by the filter media.
These were used(not by me), so it very well could hav been damaged from the heat or something. It wasnt a real controlled experiment anyway.

The reason(s) I switched to K&N is they seem to last longer(filter better), and I had switched to Castrol Syntec, which I run the full 6K miles on. Just my

On the filters...
I'm actually an Engineer that designs and assists the other engineers in my facility that makes filters for AC, Fram, and several other companies. Mostly AC though. We go through a leak test with every oil filter that gets sent out to AC as to prove that they will work adequatly. To be honost, I believe that the filters that we produce are just as good as any of the other filters on the market for far cheaper price.
Just my ten cents!!!

Re: K&N Oil Filters

I just consider K&N to be a "performance" filter.

I suppose any filter can fail with enough heat and pressure.

But you are right boug0752, most of the filters I hav cut apart, they all look the same inside.
But different in how they flow, and the size of holes inside.

I dont mind wasting a few bucks to maximize engine life.

Re: K&N Oil Filters

I have 2 K&N Oil filters on the way.

Now i have to decide which oil to use.
At 110k miles, i think i should stay away from switching to synthetic.
I may try one of the "high mileage" motor oils.

Re: K&N Oil Filters

I agree with staying with dyno oil rather than changing to synthetic at this point. High mileage oils will help with seals and oil consumption and are a good choice.

Re: K&N Oil Filters

That'll work.
The only reason I switched to Sythetic on hte GA SE was the top end of the motor was new(new heads, valve seals, gaskets, lifterz, etc).

Plus I had the oil pan off, cleaned that and the pick-up .

Didnt think it was a good idea to mix sludge with synthetic oil no matter what the bottle said.

My GT, I am using Castrol High Milage, in the green jug,
with the K&N oil filter.

Re: K&N Oil Filters

Today i changed the oil and installed the K&N filter. I switched to Castrol High mileage 5W30.

My first thoughts are that the K&N is worth the extra money for the 1" wrench nut alone.

The oil filter is jammed in the motor nice and tight. So a filter wrench or strap wrench can't really move too smooth.

As for the performance of both the filter and the Oil i guess that remains to be seen.

Moil Clean 15000 synthetic has o-ring and seal conditioners as an additive. A lot of oils do, but most don't advertise it.. I think synthetic is a good idea at any mileage. I switched at 130,000, and now have 202,000 on my monte.
