02' Cd in-dash changer not working

i just installed an xm direct fm modulator to go along with my xm receiver. while i was using my circuit tester to check for the back of the stereo for the accessory wire i tapped into the wrong wire for my splice. i disconnected that connection and resotored everything but now when i turn on the car the readout on the front of the radio says "CD ERROR" it goes away and the fm/am radio work, but whenever i try to use the cd player or push any buttons dealing with the cd player the readout says "CD ERROR" i am wondering if i somehow cut the power to it, i checked fuses and they are fine. Anyone have any idea what i should do?

There is a self diagnostic mode for the factory deck. If you'd like me to send you the steps to enter the diagnostic mode, send me a private message with an e-mail address for you that can accept PDF attachments.

Rod,

Still have that diagnostic procedure. I'm having the similar issue. Although i think a cd is stuck in the track between the changer and the player. I put a cd in for slot 1 and it never seemed to make it to the player. instead i get "CD ERROR".

Yeah, sorry. I typically skim the forums looking for the bold "unread" messages. Sometimes new posts don't show up as bold and I miss them.

The file should be in your inbox.

Re: 02' Cd in-dash changer not working

I ran the diagnostic procedure. After the speaker tests the unit displays "NO CDDJ". I think there is a fuse blown somewhere because there seems to be no power to the changer. I don't hear that light hum of the changer. I pulled the neg battery cable to see if it would reset. No luck on reset but now the head unit shows a full 6 disk load when I know there are only 2 Cd's loaded. Also, when I power off (volume button power) and then hit the CD button it displays "INITIALIZING" then it goes to "CD ERROR". The owners manual shows a changer with a removable cartridge. My changer loads from the head unit. So I'm thinking (uh oh) there an individual fuse for the changer that may be blown. I looked in the cabin fuse box and found no blown fuses. Anybody know of any such fuse?

I don't think you'll find a separate fuse for the changer. I think you'll find either a dirty lens, gummed up shafts, weak spindle motor, or a dirty switch somewhere within the changer portion of the in-dash head unit.

Re: 02' Cd in-dash changer not working

can i take it apart on my worktable in the garage to service it? if yes, do you have any pdf files for me showing how to remove and reinstall everything in from the dash. I have the Alpine system with the changer somewhere behind the glove box.

Above you mention that the CD's load from the head unit. If that's the case, the changer is part of the head unit, there won't be a separate changer behind the glove box. You take the head unit out and can work on it on your bench. Just don't make an effort to generate ESD. I probably have a PDF on how to remove the head unit in the 2002 model....

Re: 02' Cd in-dash changer not working

Thanks Rod. One more question. before I take it apart i wanted to try a reset first. So I pulled the neg battery cable off and let it sit for about 15minutes. After I put the cable back on the radio presets was still there so that didn't reset it. How do I disconnect power and reset this radio?

I don't know of a specific reset procedure. You might check the diagnostic procedure to see if there is a section in there on performing a master reset. I do recall for the climate control system there is a reset procedure outlined as part of the diagnostic procedure.

The radio may very well (sorry, I can't remember for sure) use non-volatile memory for the presents. I assume that the clock lost the correct time setting when you disconnected power. You did as much of a reset as you are going to be able to do.

Re: 02' Cd in-dash changer not working

@Rod. No such procedure in the LS_audio_diagnostics.pdf that you sent me. If there is another document on the subject please share. @joegr. the clock did not loose the time setting when i had the battery disconnected.

Guy at a car stereo install shop said to disconnecting both battery cables and touching them together will reset everything. I don't want to reset everything (the whole car) just the radio. Besides that procedure doesn't sound like a good thing to do on this car. The electronics are too delicate.
