Re: legal???
Not true, you can import a car to the US. Call DOT and they will mail you a pamphlet on how to do it. The car can come in one entire peice. I used to have it but in the time it will take me to find it, you can get them to send you one. With stuff that is availible here they will recomend that you just alter the US version, turbos don't matter to DOT, to them they are all Imprezas. Different states have different rules on registering Grey Market cars. Where it comes from does make a difference. The way to go is Japan to Canada, register the car legally in Canada. Then import it to the US and legally register it here. Cayman Islands to the US is also a good route. Japan to US works, but there are alot of horror stories of cars coming into customs, and arriving at your delivery point, wrapped in packing plastic, missing a motor, broken widshields, missing rims, etc. I did alot of research on this as my father was looking to get a Skyline GTS or an EVO VII< so we did alot of dealing with customs. In the end he got neither, it ends up being very complex and expensive. For a WRX your looking at close to $60,000 delivered including the car estimated at $15,000. Shipping gets you $5,000-$10,000 from Japan. Now if its already here and it is a cheap(ish) WRX in California, the car is probably not converted to be US legal. If the car is here, has legal plates on it, and is insured. Then the car is totally fine and you should have no worries in buying it, but I recommend that you check your local laws before you write any checks.
