We had it done on our 2002 at about 35k. I think it was around $60 but I lose track since we've had plenty of service. Wait until you see the cost of replacing the transfer case fluid!

ok, give it to me -- how bad was it in terms of costs for the fluid ??? (wincing in pain awaiting your reply...)

To change all three differentials was about $350. The center one uses a very 'special' fluid.

GM autotrak II is supposedly the only oil to be used in the transfer case (non AWD models). In USD, it's about $10-15/qt IIRC and the system holds just under 2 qts. A fuel filter is usually under $10. Fuel filter changeout in USD is typically ~$50. Pure gravy-train profit for a dealership.

G/luck

Re: about to hit 40k mi. in '03 EXT

I have an 05 EXT V8. If I'm not mistaken, the 05's switched to in-tank fuel filters, making it impossible to change. Is this fully true? (I know it's in the tank, but is it changeable or will it ever need changed?) Also, coming up on 40K miles and need the differential fluids changed (scared to see the cost). I was wondering (don't want to change the thread topic or anything) if this will solve a problem I've been having with the locking differential, locking when it shouldn't. I know it sounds vague and hard to diagnose w/o looking at it, but has anyone with the optional locking diff. had it lock when it shouldn't? Mine has done it many times now (pushing 20 or 30 times).
