Paint chips on lower rear doors

The vehicle is a 02 Envoy. This vehicle is never driven on gravel roads. The other day I noticed that the panel directly located in front of the rear tires has many paint chips. This part actually curves out somewhat so I can see where it would chip out after this many years. If this part was flat there would be no problem. The paint color is the dark blue and the chips are quite noticable. The only way this will look good again is to paint this part. Is there an aftermarket product that you could just cover this? The only thing i can come up with is to sand it down and paint it and then cover it with some clear tape. My S-10 came from the factory with this clear tape and it really works quite well. Many thanks for the advice!

3m makes a clear material that can be cut and shaped to cover the area, stone gard is the trade name.

Another way to fix this is to install running boards. I have them (o2 SLE) and a friend with an 05 SLT has many chips. He removed his running boards after getting home from the dealer. He has tons of chips after 1 year where I have almost none.
