Front Axle Outer CV Boot

Hey guys, I just found out that yesterday that I have a pretty good size tear in my front right outer CV boot. I will be buying a new boot from infiniti today for around $45 bucks but I was wondering if any of you have have replaced boots before and if you think its too hard of a job to do alone because im sure it I have someone do it theyll charge me a good amount of money for labor and I wanted to do it myself, do you guys things thats a easy job to do alone, thanks alot.

The general consensus is that it's a lot easier just to get a remanufactured axle for ~$70 than to try to mess around with replacing the boot and regreasing the joint. If you don't have a shop around you that does this, check out www.raxles.com

I just called Raxles and they dont sell remanufactured axles they sell new joints for $150 I just called and found out, and I cant sit here and wait for them to ship it because I need to be using my car for things I cant be driving around with a ripped CV boot and with labor for the axle replacement itll easily be $300 all together. More than I wanna spend right now.

Man, depending on how long that boot has been open, it might make more sense to buy a new half shaft, because if its been open for very long the joint it probably torn up. I have to replace my halfshaft because the boot was open for like a week and even thought I had a new boot put on it the joint still tore itself up.

The tear is not very noticable you have to really look at it to see it, its only about an inch and a half tear, not huge, there is nothing wrong with the half shaft, the car only has 45K on it, I found a guy that will do the whole replacement of the boot for $80 and he provides the boot so im gonna take him to get it done.

Oh man, just this weekend I was installing my springs and as I was doing that, i accidentally yanked on the wheel too hard; in the process of dong that I pulled out my drive shaft! Guess I'm too strong for my own good. I had to disassemble everything and reassemble the drive shaft. I had no idea what the hell I was doing but I will tell you this much, "don't fuck with it" unless you know whats up. i had to re-grease the cv-boot and knock the drive shaft back in, took like 4 hours to figure out the problem, now I know why it cost so much to have a cv boot replaced. I'm glad I own the G20 manuel, if I didn't...whoa!

$45!!!! Damn - you can get a replacment boot from your local parts store for about $8.

Anyone had experience with Speedi-Boots?? They're about $14 including grease and you don't have to pull the joint.

Question is, do they work???

Replacing the boot is a cheap and short term fix. I just had my entire front axle replaced with www.raxles.com. They were $150.00 per side and hard to find anywhere else (W/Limited Slip Differential). I also replaced both control arms and the drivers side wheel bearing. I would get the repalcement axle if I were you and check all of the above while your at it. I beleive my badly worn cv axle lead to my bad wheel bearing and both of my lower ball joints were shot to shit. It was cheaper to buy the entire control arms from www.thepartsbin.com and have them intsalled. Believe me preventive maintainance is the way to go. Sit on it if you want to....you will find yourself SOL (Shit Outta Luck!)
