Re: not a camaro or a chevy..but...

if i can verify the trans is bad im just gonna part it out......as far as the fluid goes, my brother tried out his mechanic skills (AHHH) on it..he took the tranny pan off to inspect and put it back together without a gasket and lost all the new fluid...he started the engine several times after that wihtout fluid...so it certainly didnt get better..............i dont have any idea what color the fluid was

Well have you or him tried dropping the pan again and properly reinstalling it? Also, if the pan has a magnet attached to it, as most do, check it for metal shavings. If you see some shavings on it, then odds are 1 or more bands have snapped in it. Also make sure to change the tranny filter as well, not just the fluid.

Same exact thing happened to my friends Malibu recently. I dropped the pan replaced the filter and gasket. Poured in some new fluid and it worked like a charm. There were some metal shavings in the pan though, so I told my friend not to expect much more life out of that tranny without getting it checked out at shop so they can rip it apart and find out whats broken.

So try that and see if it helps.

Well, some "furriness" as I like to call it on the magnet is normal, it's wear from the clutch packs. The place you REALLY don't want to see shavings is in a diff.

Ah well guess it's not as bad as I had saw it too be then. The particles were as you described, "furry" with a very tiny chunk or two here and there. Glad to have a guy like you around who knows a thing or two about transmissions, as I'm not very keen on them. I wish I could get to work on some and learn some things about them, but with just starting college and working practically every day I just don't have the time.

Re: not a camaro or a chevy..but...

Yeah,I just thought I'd throw that out there as a general statement. There's very few pans you'll drop and not find anything on the magnet, I know if I didn't anything, then I'd be worried .

In contrast, that's also why it is said that if the trans has high miles (100K miles or more) and it's never been serviced, if the fluid is gritty, it is more than likely best to leave it alone. The grit is the friction disk materials that used to be in the clutch packs and wore off and is now floating around in the fluid. Once that fluid is drained, there goes your material, albeit in the wrong place but there. And thus you only have the metal disks + fluid = no go.

Re: not a camaro or a chevy..but...

it sounds like what my dads ford windstar done before we cancelled insurance and burned it, except we had just had the fluid changed and drove it for about 3 weeks and the he was sitting at a red light and when the light turned green he let off the brake and stepped onto the gas, it lurched forward and acted like it caught neutral, it wouldn't move in drive or reverse, he agreed to not putting anymore money into the pile of crap so he done what any warm blooded creature would have done, he let me and all of my friends totally destroy it, beat the fuck out of it, blew the already halfway gone motor, played tug o war with a tree and a truck using it as the chain and finally burned it and to the scrapyard it went. not like any of the rest helped you out but I was just saying.
