I have a '96 grand am, 3.1 6 cyl. Hot air is coming out of the vents, even when the heater, defroster, and air are off. What does this mean? Is something burning or overheating?

Inside the climate control duct system, there is a door that directs air through the heater core, AC Evaporator, or just closes all to gether. Its controlled by either Vac. Or electric solonoids... I can't rember which. Since I don't hear any kind of vac. sounds when I switch heater controls on my 96, I'd have to assume its electrical. So, I'd check for blown fuses... If no luck there, get a repair manuel... that should have a diagram of what things look like in there. So you can test to see if anything is not working or just plain stuck.
Most likley its something electric tho. |

Re: Hot air out of the Vents
how much hot air is comming from the vents? I have a 2001 GAGT and if the temp is set to the hot side and everything is off a bit of hot air still comes though the vents; I figured it was just engine heat making its way through that system, but if i turn the temp knob to cold the hot air doesnt come out

When I turn the slector to off, there isn't any air comming out of the vents regardless of speed. I checked this AM and tried to listen for sounds of Vac operating when going from hot to cold, or ac to defrost and didn't hear any.
Sorry, I don't have a repair manuel yet do I don't know which fuse. Look for one labeled as Climate control if you still have the sticker on the fuse panel cover. But I think that only controls the slection unit... not the actual solonoids on the firewall. $20 for a haynes or chilton manuel would be a very good investment for these cars. After Frances blows through, I'm going to get one my self. |

OOpppss.
Just double checked and my 96 GT is Vac. operated. Check the lines on back of the control unit to see if they're on correctly & not cracked. Also, pull the line off of the diaphram on the pass firewall to make sure there is vac. going to it. If you have a Vac. pump you can hook it up to the diaphram to see if that is any good. (see if the door moves when you put vac. to it with the manuel pump). |

Re: Hot air out of the Vents
ok guys this one is a simple one theres no vacume or wires for the door control it is a cable inside the heat control that runs up to the door to direct heat when you turn the heat control knob it is on a cylender in the back ofthe knob as you turn it it pulls or pushes the cable which in return advances the door from hot to netrul to cold depending on were you set the door to on the heat control i would trace the cable back to the door control knob and make sure it is hooked up or stuck in one postion you will find it just right and above thecontrol knob and about 9 inches back remove the glove box assyblee and you can see it sorta from sitting in the passengers seat hope this helps a little
