not taking 134 at 25 psi
I have recently tried to fill my car which is in desperate need of an ac recharge (digital therm. in vents reading 57-59 deg. with windows closed and on full blast).
The recharger reads 25 psi and the vehicle is not taking it. What could be causing this. Any replies are greatly appreciated- Tim |

Do you have the can with the little gauge on it? If so I have a probem with my GP wouldn't take it either come to find out after 1 min of research the coupler need to be pushed on more and held in place.

I have been using what I believe is the same system you're refering to; the blue trigger and gauge mechanism that screws on to the top of the can.
So essentially the Grand Prix was staying in the green (like mine at 25 psi) and all that was needed was to adjust the end of the hose? I am hoping that is the case-I need to get this taken care of with these northeast temps these days. Thanks for the responses- -Tim |

The one side stop and go gauge does not tell you what your system is doing or is over charged or undercharged. A overcharged or malfunction air condition system can reach over 500 lbs of pressure. Enough to blow up that can or system and freeze you at first and the burn you or blind you and if any propane /butane in there blow and light you up. The stop leak crap and who knows what kind of oil in the kits there will stop your system for sure. Just like pouring super glue in it. And some kits even contain freon with a butane mixer. Good for a big blast. If you are going to do it do it right and safe. But over the years just adding freon is getting harder to do. Newer systems have to have the correct amount of freon down to the ounces. Most will need pumped down and vacuumed down and the right and amount of oil and a set amount freon charge installed to get the air to cool right and the system to last. If an air condition is low there is usually a leak that needs fixed and also a lose of lubricating oil from system. Also air and moisture enters a low system If you are going to try to do it get the proper type air condition gauge set with the low and high side gauges. Hook up the gauges and get a reading with compressor running at idle and at 2000 rpm on the high and low side. Post back pressure reading and we can help you. MT

I appreciate the responses but I would like to have this fixed sooner rather than later- Does anyone know where the best place to take it to have good quality service done-i.e. midas or should I try a dealer?

I personally wouldn't be afraid of the Wal-Mart death kits (funny that’s a good name for them!!) I've used them a few times on my old Dodge Dakota its got a leak so I know it low so I just top it off granted its not the correct way but I have never experienced any problems. In fact a lot of AC guys around here just top it off and don’t draw it down if the system is just low. But they do use UV dye to find the leak at a later date. New systems do need more precise amounts as the amount of refrigerant they use is getting less and less.
Ask around I would avoid the dealer thou.

I have used Meineke for muffler and have seen and listen to the techs talk to ppl about other car stuff, they seem honest and the muffler work was top notch. I do not know if they do A/C
http://www.meineke.com/ Also Pep Boys seems good, I do alot of the work myself. Over the last 20 years I have gone to the dealer for repairs maybe 5 times and that was warranty stuff for a new car. So these are just guesses from observations. |
