Opinions on best Photoetch Nut and Bolt sets?

Hi Guys,

The title pretty much speaks for itself - I'm after opinions of the best photoetch Nut and Bolt sets for general detailing. I'm quite curious about the rubber backed photoetch sets - are they any good ? Are they sticky backed so no glue is required ? I've never used them before, only used normal PE. If the rubber backed ones are any good, are there bolt sets which are rubber backed ?

Guess after all that the title doesn't really speak for itself does it

Good thing about those rubber backed ones is that you dont have to trim them, they are perfectly clean and perfect when glued on place, they are not self adshive so glue is required, I have Scaleracecars ones and I am very happy with them.
Bad thing is that it is a bit tricky to detach them from that rubber thing and they are so small that you can lose them in no time.
But if you ask me that are the only ones I want to use, those regular PE parts (without rubber back) are extrimly hard to trim.

Replicas & Miniatures, Scale Motorsports, Detail Master/ Model Car Garage and SRC all make nice Nut and Bolt sets. R&M are rubber backed as well, I have had pretty good luck with those. I usually use a trimmed down Grabit Stix from SMS and the tip of a knife to get them loose and hold the part. Then I just place a drop of glue on the part and hold it in place for a few seconds. Once the glue dries, it comes right off the sticky stix.

You don't by any have pictures of these, and do you sell them? I've got the SMS ones, and they are nice, but too large in places... I've heard the MCG set are a bit smaller..

also, I've read that if you cut a section of the flet, and drop in lacquer thinner, the rubber backing melts off, leaving the P/E behind, ready for attaching..

and I always use a toothpick, with a bit of water on the end.. works everytime..

Perfect Parts, they look nice but need some cleaning after removing, many different sizes and shapes, this is actually from the McLaren MP 4/6 set but they also sell Nuts, Bolts and Washer sets seperate!

Here is a picture of the .055" set, it shows up the best. The other sizes are,
.014", .020", .031" and .041". Prices vary from $3.95 to $8.95. I need to get some new pictures of them up on the site.

Wish I’d known about some of these, I got the SMS version for my CLK GTR, and they are way too big. Be good for 1/12 scale bikes, but too large for 1/24, which is a shame… Cost a few quid as well..

The MCG and SCR ones look good.. MCG look to be just what I need, damn… More money spent.. why is this hobby such a bank balance drainer..??

The MCG ones look like the ones to go. Look like they give the most variety in one set. I think I'll have to put an order in for a couple of those from you Dave in a few days.

Also Dave, what the quality of the R&M Resin Bolts RM48 like ? Are they a viable alternative to Sakatsu bolts or do they not even compare ? How much clean up is required ? and what's the size of these ?

Where are these nuts, bolts and washers used for? Anyone has a picture?

Hey guys just a little tip for you. If you use a q-tip and a little paint thinner you can easily remove the nuts and bolts as it breaks down the adhesive material used to hold the parts on. much easier then the xacto space launch method, of course this works for the rubber backed ones only.

I find that the SMS and MCG fit all my needs. The sms might be a bit too large for most 1/24 applications, (but ok for some), but are just right for 1/12 cars and bikes. You get different head types, phillips, slotted, rivets. The mcg are perfect for 1/24 and 1/43 and even certain 1/12 applications, also with different head types. I also have the SRC sets but have yet to use them, looks good though. Those come in scales from 1/43 to 1/12. All 3 of these go a long way as each "sheet" has +500 pieces.
