Question 98 I4 Evap Emission, VSV picture?

My check engine light has been on for some time now. Codes 440 or 441, can't remember which, along with code 446. After searching all through the forum my understanding is that it is probably the VSV. However, I don't know what a VSV looks like and can't find pictures anywhere (even after searching web). The one on the side of the airbox seems pretty straight forward, but i'd like to make sure I'm not pulling out the wrong part. And I don't know what the one on the rear end looks like, or where it is. "Next to the Charcoal can" , yea, don't know how one of those on a car actually looks either. It should be simple to find, but I don't have a lift, or even jackstands or a crawler to make it easier to look under there. Can someone who can get under the car easily please take a pic of the front and rear VSV and post? Or even tell me what side of the car it's on, and possible a more detailed description? I'm not a complete noob, so that woudl probabyl be good enough, though picture would be better
Or, if I'm a complete dumbass and got something wrong, let me know that too (like there only being 1 VSV instead of 2 like i'm thinking)

Thanks!

PS. Brian R., How do you know all this sh!t? However it is, props (or kudos, whichever you prefer) for takin the time to educate and help people like me!

Re: 98 I4 Evap Emission, VSV picture?

I also have a '98 and the charcoal canister is at the rear, unlike the '97.

It's right behind the fuel tank, to the right, maybe slighty above the fuel tank. That means if you're standing behind the car and looking at your beautiful trunk (don't lie, you love that trunk) it's underneath the car to the right. It's a rectangle box with hoses plugging in it.

There are 3 VSVs for the whole system. There's the VSV for EVAP next to the air filter box. There's the VSV for EGR located behind the engine block, you can follow the vacuum hose down from the EGR valve to find that one. And there's the VSV for the vapor pressure sensor that is on the canister. It's hard to describe really but it's the only part of the canister that has an electrical connector identical to the one on the VSV next to the air filter box.

It would probably be best for you to buy some tracks and back the car up them to lift it up.

Re: 98 I4 Evap Emission, VSV picture?

There is a generation 4 Camry manual (97-2001) stickied at the top of the Camry forum on Toyotanation.com. It may help you if you go to that forum and download the manual. It's great to have for other things.

It may also help if you go to any Toyota dealer's parts department and ask them to show you these parts on their schematic. It will give you a good idea of what they look like and where they are located.

Re: 98 I4 Evap Emission, VSV picture?

here's an issue, soilent green. you have the same car as I do (with tha beautiful trunk) and you say the vsv is near the airbox, and on the rear it is on the right. The gen4 repair manual (specifically for a 1999) says its on the rear left, and that the one in the engine compartment (not the EGR one) is not even close to the airbox. And apparently there are 4 VSV.
I think i'm going to go with "the people" on this one. going to check the rear right. However, where do I apply this 12 V that is needed to check the VSV. Specifically, where on the vsv do i connect the wires?

thanks

p.s.Its the people!! Soilent Green is the people!!
i never thought i'd meet anyone else who has ever seen that, other than the people who were with me.

Re: 98 I4 Evap Emission, VSV picture?

Well there IS a VSV near the air filter box AND another one on the charcoal canister. I was reading this out of my Haynes Manual pretty much because I've been looking to fix the P0446 myself maybe.

I think there is definitely 3 VSVs on the '98. The one you found underneath the air duct hose, near the airbox(VSV for EVAP), then one on the back of the engine block (VSV for EGR) and the VSV for vapor pressure sensor on the canister. The Haynes book details all the differences between years or the GEN 4. My father has a '97 and the charcoal canister is somewhere under the battery on his Cam.

I checked under my car, and the canister is between the spare tire and the fuel tank, in the center, not to the right sorry. Anyways you cannot miss it. I don't think it's a hard fix judging by a quick look, you probably don't even need to remove the whole canister to replace the VSV that's on it. Just find a way to lift the back of the car.

Go grab the Manual from the Toyotanation forums, that'll really help you. If I had a digital camera I would've took pictures already...

I have provided a link to the 1999 Camry manual in the sticky thread at the top of this forum.

Re: 98 I4 Evap Emission, VSV picture?

Oddly enough, i'm having more trouble finding (or deciding which one is) the one by the airbox than the one by the charcoal can. The picture of the one in the rear is the second shot, it's the thing with the blue clip visible.

Which one is the EVAP VSV in the front? There are two that look very very similar (except for wire color).
Blue is filter box
Yellow is intake pipe
Green arrow points to the one right on the airbox (i don't think it's this one)
Red is one that is just below the air pipe, but attached to something else
anyone have a suggestion?
Red or Green?

Or are these not the VSVs at all?

And can someone please tell how to check if they work? where do i apply the voltage to make them "click"?

Thanks

Re: 98 I4 Evap Emission, VSV picture?

These are all from the Camry manual I mentioned in my previous post.

Green is IAT sensor
Red is VSV for EVAP
Check out the pic of the VSV for EVAP in the third picture below and compare with your photo
There is a better pic of the IAT sensor in the manual, but not worth posting.
