Best way to sand down orange peel
I have a car with minor orange peel, and I was wondering what the best way to sand it down was. Like, wet sanding or what specific grits would work best?
EDIT: I also have only three-quaters of an inch of the paint left in the jar (2.5oz from Cobra Colors), and I was wondering how best to thin it to make it last as long as possible. I have both paint thinner and isopropal alcohol, so I can do it with either. |

Re: Best way to sand down orange peel
Didn't we already go over how to thin CobraColors in your progress thread? All right, one more time- PPG DTL-105, get it from your local PPG dealer. Find the link in Leon's how-to's. Yes, you may have to buy a gallon, yes it may cost you $30- but why buy quality paint if you don't use quality thinner with it? It is an absolute necesity for spraying CobraColors, no way around it. The Sea Serpent and Devil's Venom will turn out the same way if sprayed unthinned....
As for sanding, try sandpaper. It's hard to say what would work best, as it's very situation dependant. How hard is the paint, how textured, how quickly does it clog the paper, etc. Try 2000, if it doesn't work, try 1500, and on and on. Try it wet or dry, pick your favorite. The way to sand orangepeel is by whatever way works for you. Judging from your pics, you're in for alot of work. It's worth a try, but it may be best in the end to strip and start over. If you do, I strongly recommend 99% isopropyl or Simple Green cleaner for removing CobraColors.

Re: Best way to sand down orange peel
i would suggest not worrying too much about and just dive in.
no amount of asking the same questions and getting the same answers is going to teach half as much as actually getting your hands in there.

Re: Best way to sand down orange peel
Buying a set of polishing CLOTHS or PADS would be a good idea, too. Sandpaper doesn't conform to fine curves or sand as uniformly as polishing cloth or a polishing pad.
Micro-Mark makes a paticularly good set that I've used for years. You wet them with some nice warm water, then sand lightly upon the finish, working up through the grits, changing direction 90 degrees with each progressive grit.
