Sticking Key Problem ???

Got a '03 Malibu where every once in a while the key will not turn completely in the cylinder and then you can't get it out. The dealer has replaced the cylinder in the dash, and they have worked on the shift lever mechanism. We thought they had it finally solved but, it has happened again. We don't know where to turn !!
We do find that when it sticks, that if you push hard on the shift lever, that usually lets you turn the key to get it out of the cylinder. This thing only has about 23K on it.
Could it be the key ? the dealer said NO !!

Any body else have this problem ?

Re: Sticking Key Problem ???

It could be the key, but the odds of having two successive lock cylinders and keys which will not turn to the LOCK position are very, very slim - At least statistically. I'd have to agree with the dealer's opinion and look elsewhere first.

The place I would look is at the column locking and shift interlock mechanisms. Some models have a direct linkage to a column mounted shifter, while others have a small cable linkage to a floor shifter, and yet others have a solenoid in the steering column operated by a switch in the floor shift release button. Which type shifter do you have?

Re: Sticking Key Problem ???

It's just now coming to light that GM never resolved the key lock cylinder issue (which began with the 97s - I had it replaced 7 times in six years in my former '98 LS) in ANY of the prev generation Malibus.

It's the lock cylinder. Either the key gets stuck or you have the infamous security system shutdown after the lock cylinder decides it doesn't like the key.

Absolutely pathetic. At least they're trying to be proactive with the current generation, but I'm beginning to think that one of my issues on the Maxx will also never be resolved.
