Seat belt recoil question

I have a '97 and the drivers side seat belt doesn't want to recoil. One problem I see is that it's twisted between the outside of the pillar mounted bracket and where it goes down to the floor. The space in the bracket is too narrow to untwist it. I was told that the plastic cover between the doors that covers the belt is not removeable without breaking it. Can anyone help me with this. Is there a way to make this functional again?

Do you mean the part that has the slot that the belt goes through that's mounted up on the pillar? Break away the plastic to open up the slot to twist the belt?

Re: Seat belt recoil question

ive takin my interior apart amny time for after market wireing like my amp and so forth and the easyist way to do this is to open both the front and rear doors on the driver side and if you look at the bottom of the door opening you will see a piece of plastic that says ford on it that strechs about half the length or the door right in the middle just take a flat blade screw driver and pry up on it not to hard but ir should un snap do both front and rear and you will be able to get that center part off and you should have enough room to doo what you need and never brake a piece of plastic like that it looks bad and if it wasnt broken whaen puting it in then there has to be a way to get it out with out brakeing it and fyi i was able to untwist my seat belt with out doing any of this just by fighting with it but eather way itr will make u happy

good luck

I had same problem. The recoil mechanism is in the trunk. I had the belt twist and the twisted portion got inside the coiled portion of the belt. Check that out.

Re: Seat belt recoil question

Rather than start a new thread on this topic I searched a bit and found this, but I have the same problem with my drivers side belt (it won't retract).

I did look at it very good and even pulled it out 100% of the way out, didn't see any twists or kinks in it, do the recoilers go bad ever or is there something else I should do or look at?

If cracking or removing some plastic trim thing will fix this I am the first to do that if needed.

Also read the recoiler is in the trunk? Is that correct for the front seat belt the recoiler mechanism is in the trunk? if thats the case maybe its twisted in a place far beyond what I can see even with the belt totally extended from drivers seat position.

Re: Seat belt recoil question

Sometimes it helps with various cars if you just make sure the door is open really wide when trying to get the belt to recoil, know it sounds crazy but it does work on several old and new cars

Re: Seat belt recoil question

Having recently gotten my AC fixed and my Drivers side power window regulator replaced, now the biggest thing bugging me on my car is still the drivers side seatbelt wll not go up on it's own without me "feeding" it.

Ok the other thing buggin me is the drivers side power mirror shaking at 35mph or higher but I can't figure that one out without replacing it.

I don't see any twists in the seatbelt itself, is there anything else I can do to try and get this going better? Anywhere I can apply some wd40 or lithium spray grease to help it move better or don't even mess with that?

The belt does retract, just not on it's own, needs to be held up then it feeds in vs just snapping back up and in like passenger side does.

How and where would I get in there to get that thing moving better or what else besides a twisted belt can make this happen?
