Arizona to vote on official language?

Today I was browsing on yahoo and found this...

"PHOENIX - Arizona lawmakers agreed to let voters decide whether to deny more state services to illegal immigrants and whether to make English the state's official language. "

I think its pretty stupid.

Re: Arizona to vote on official language?

yeah, it is pretty dumb.

it reminds me of a story on CNN i read a couple weeks back about this cheese steak stop in Philly. basically you could only order in English. but the workers would help you if you didn't speak English. seems retarded. especially when the restaraunt was in a multi-lingual location.

I somewhat agree and disagree. The part I agree is that yes they should have to speak english. I disagree refusing service just because they can't speak english. Especially in South Philly where theres lots of minorities.

Re: Arizona to vote on official language?

The article states that they are making tougher laws to address the illegal situation, and considering making English the official language of the state. The governor previously vetoed weaker legislation, suggesting it needed to be stronger.

According to MonsterBengt's statistics, almost 10% of Arizona's population is made up of people that are there illegally. That's a problem, and it will only get worse.

I'm curious about why you think an official language is stupid.

I didn't say that. I said voting on official language is stupid because its obviously english. They shouldn't have to vote. People should learn english if we're here in America. Bnaylor speaks arabic because he was stationed in Saudi Arabia for some years. Its extremely hard to be in a country without knowing there language.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree that it's a given, but apparently there is enough of an issue with it so that it needs to be addressed.
