Unhappy No AC in 97 Neon

When I try to run the AC in my Neon, I notice both cooling fans run for about 1 sec then stop for 1 sec. This will continue until I turn off the AC. I pulled the AC clutch relay and now both fans run constantly but NO AC. I did notice some chatter in the relay before I pulled it. Also the engine runs harder (and I use more gas) when I set the defroster on, and I know that some cars run the ac compressor at the same time as the defroster. Easy fix? Hope so, It is getting hot.

Re: No AC in 97 Neon

ok its not running right with the relay in. and when you take it out the fans then run right. get a new relay. second the running harder with the defroster on most likely because when you turn it on the voltage drops slightly so the alt cluch kicks on which burns more gas ect ect.
if your fans are not running right it will get hot. change the relay first

The defrost does use the A/C to help with moisture in the car. You can fix it so that it doesn't come on unless you want it to.

As to the gas, I don't think I should use a 1/4 of a tank in 15 min.

Do your A/C lines get cold at all? You could be out of freon. Do you hear the blower kick on?

depending on the driving habbits in combination with the ac on can burn your gas in 15 or less easily. if driving normal and still eating all the gas. it could be you fpr.

ok and it didnt run normal with the new relay then, check for loose wires.

weather your ac is low or not the fans will run if there is nothing else wrong. there is a high side shut off switch which will shut off all the compressor and fan. this can happen from it having low freon, because the ac compressor gets to hot. but it wont get that hot right away it will take a few mins so i doubt thats the problem.

I have a 98 Neon-and with stop and go traffic, the ac on full, and the defroster on----I can go through a 1/4 tank of gas in 15 minutes. Just FYI
