what does offset mean?

when looking at rims, what does the offset mean? what difference does that make and what is a suggested offset for a 2000 ls V8? im looking at a set of 20's. I would like to get some to fit without any other modifications to make them not rub or have the car at the same ride height as stock. thanks guys

The offset on the LS wheel is 60 i believe. You would want to find a wheel as close as possible to this number. The lower you go the more the wheel will stick out from the fenders. example, you seen those ricers with wheels that stick out like its going to pounce or something.

The wheels i have have a 42mm offset.

Not a great reveiling pic, but you can get a somewhat idea. Mine are 18x7.5

Negative offset wheels are like deep dish wheels where the lip is very pronounced. Stock is 60mm and mine are 42mm so i have about a 1.5" lip on my wheels. I believe the lower the number the more negative offset you get.
