1988 Camaro IROC-Z, 305 TPI

Hi everbody,

Any help is very much appreciate since nobody knows what's wrong with my IROC. Its symptoms are the following:

- the warmer it gets the rougher it idles
- sometimes it shuts down completely while idling
- sometimes the engine just revs up saving the engine of shutting down
- does not take gas evenly while pushing the throttle
- oil pressure gauge jumps up and down and falls to '0' while idling

What has been checked so far is:

- no leaks
- oil pump is okay
- oil pressure sensor is okay
- ECM has been replaced but is dead

Does anybody know what could be wrong? Thanks, Peter

Check all fuses and electrical...Make shure there isnt a short thats gonna kill a new ECM after when you install it.
The ECM could be causing this(make shure you keep the prom)
Start by getting a new one(or a used one from a salvage yard)...Then well see if there is anything else wrong...

Erratic problems that begin to occur after the engine is getting warm usually points to an ignition system failure.

Re: 1988 Camaro IROC-Z, 305 TPI

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. In the end my mechanic switched two air gap switches which solved the problem. Please do not ask me how this cured the overheating problem. Neither he nor I have the slightest idea.

But now, the next problem occurs already. As soon as the engine starts to get warm (not hot) a knocking from the engine can be heard. It is absolutely not loud, you really need to listen closely but there is a knocking. Has anyone a good idea what this could be all about?

Can you have him enlighten the world as to to what the hairy hell a air gap switch is?

Next thing you know he'll solve your new problem by repalcing the muffler bearing

Sounds like what he really did has alter the ignition timing.

Don't forget to have him check the blinker fluid, change the exhaust filter, and fill the horn with a full can of beep.
