Fuel Problemo

I have a '99 Pontiac Montana. I am a poor graduate student with 4 kids and a wife. Soooooooo, my van cuts out sometimes and dies like it ran out of gas. It does it intermittently. Everytime, I take it in it doesn't do it...typical. Anyway, could this be the fuel pump? It only has 78k. I just hate to take it to the dealer and spend $80 without the K-Y. The temperature gauge works fine. It dies whenever it wants. Usually when I am accelerating or on a long trip(heat??).

Please help.
PS. I will look at you feet for free, ha ha.( I am studying podiatry)

Re: Fuel Problemo

Welcome to AF!!

Try changing the crank position sensor. Sudden stalling is a common symptom of a bad CPS it will also not usually present with a check engine light. If this is the 3800 the cps is located behind the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine.

I have this dry flaky skin between my toes ...

I have to concur with GTP Dad. My wife's '92 Jeep had the same symptoms. It would stall any time it wanted to, and eventually would not start back up.

If the Crankcase Position Sensor is going bad, you should also have a code stored in the computer. See if the folks at the local parts store can check for codes for you (for $0). If there is a code stored, please post it here.

Here is some more information on testing and such:

Re: Fuel Problemo

Does it just die? Or does it sputter, then die (like it really was running out of gas)? If it's the latter, fuel pump or fuel filter could be the problem. I also had a similar problem about a year ago where the contacts under the driver's seat for the fuel pump were too loose. We used a dental pick took to bend the contacts back out so it was a tighter connection. Fixed the problem.

Re: Fuel Problemo

Haddon here,
Thank You for all your ideas. I just changed the fuel filter and spilled gas all over my face. The problem seems to be gone. I will keep my fingers crossed.
Oh the dry flakey area between the toes could be an indication of interdigital Tinea pedis, caused by Trycophyton rubrum, you may need an antifungal.

I will keep you posted.
By the way I went to AutoZone and no codes were showing.

Val
